The younger generation hasnt held the power in any era of the US.

The baby boomers had the power because they outnumbered the older generations, especially in 1972 when the voting age was lowered to 18. Many 18 to 21 year olds got into politics. There were a couple of college students on the local city council and the county board. Currently there is no member under the age of 35 on either of those and most are over 50. Several of the seats were uncontested in the last election.
