no gi judo???

Wow, that's pretty far from here, about 22 hours drive, ever been to Whitehorse?

Whitehorse, actually I think I have, didnt stay there but I think me & my buddies drove through there on our way to Seattle.

yup, you gotta drive thru here when you go south on the Alaska Hwy. Cool, North of 60 fighters. Sam Hogar from your town?

No, Sams in Eagle River. But I'm met him in Anchorage though. He came to ref some local mma fights here.

Very good. I've done nearly a year of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and just recently started attending the no-gi classes, so I obviously prefer the gi. Explains why I do Judo, too...

But I wouldn't mind doing a no-gi Judo class. Granted, in my Jishin-Ryu Jujitsu class, the yellow - orange belts are mostly Judo throws, and since it's a self defense class, you learn it without the gi.

it would be interesing to see how they teach. Considering that Kayro is basically teh only one doing judo hip throws without a gi in MMA i would like to see how other judokas are adjusting to no-gi. Heck even the japanese olympians are not "throwing" people. They just clinch and trip.

Any good judoka will train no-gi occasionally, especially with wrestler/jiu jitsu types. You cannot be a world class judoka without cross training these days, and even the Japanese olympic team realizes this, and that is why they took 50% of the gold medals this past olympics.

My suggestion: learn the basics with the Gi (through Brown belt) then start cross training. Guys who focus only on no-gi tend to be terrible at standup as soon as they put on the Gi. They are lost.

Considering that most people where clothes all the time, it really makes more sense. And as soon as you throw a buddy when he is horseplaying around, you'll understand why practicing with the Gi makes sense.
