Health NIN quandary.

I thought cats were easy and self-sufficient? Some people might be too young to realize the importance on NIN in the 90s. They created a scene where I lived that had many clubs having an "Industrial" room that played that music. No clubs today do that. Hope you get there.
I was a teenager in the 90’s and I was into metal. NIN was trendy so I automatically hated them. In my 30’s he was still putting shit out so I listened to it and loved it. Then I went back and listened to Pretty Hate Machine and realized what a dumbass I was as a teenager. Trent is one of the GOAT musicians out there.

Yep... Might cat won't even go to the concert unless they are VIP tickets

cat-dancing.gif

VIP or bust!

I bought tickets for NIN for a September LA date. After my cats throwing up etc on the way to Vegas and having to come back home, I pretty much wrote it off seeing Trent again.

Found out during the week that the concert is the same day as his album release, so it's going to be fucking nuts.

I have a "wellness" check with the cats on the 16th, the gig is the 19th. I am so remote that without even thinking NIN that was the earliest vet appointment I could get.

Do y'all have these issues?
I don’t get it. There’s three days veteeen the appointment and concert, what is da issue?

Also thanks for putting this on my radar. I might go. Last time I saw them with soundgarden about ten years ago.

I was still into GnR, Metallica, Van Halen....I had never heard anything like them. When I saw the video for Wish, I went out and bought the EP and Pretty Hate Machine. Music was going in all sorts of directions. What a time to be a music fan.

Go to the show.

They put on a great live performance. Seen them several times.

And I think also a festival... but can't place it.
NIN is one of the greatest live bands I’ve ever seen. I was blown the fuck away the first time I saw them.

I was never a mega NIN fan but always liked them, but I became a much bigger fan after seeing them live.

I saw them 3 times in 1994, in 3 different sized venues: a small club which was a warmup show for the Downward Spiral tour (that show and the venue it was at is a story in and of itself), a convention center type venue, and an arena. They were phenomenal each time.

Those NIN shows back in ‘94 were fucking crazy. I’d like to see them again, it like many bands they’re skipping over WI entirely. I’d have to go down to Chicago to catch them.

They’re one of those bands I recommend everyone go see live, they’re fantastic.

Definitely impressed me too. I had mostly listened to Pretty Hate Machine when I saw the first show, which is pretty clearly dominated by sequencing and studio production, was really drawn into a well played and great sounding live show.

I respect that. Did not feel.like they were "cheating" (though I wouldn't be shocked to find out they had a backing track) but there were a bunch of real musicians on stage giving a show and Trent was memorable.

I would have loved to see them in a small venue.

I small Marilyn Manson with stabbing westward at a tiny little maybe 300 person club in NYC. Good show, stabbing westward was tremendous live. Manson looked like an alien.

There are definitely some sequenced elements when they play live, loops either triggered by MIDI keyboard or by the drummer hitting a pad that triggers a loop. Vocals, guitars, bass, and other drums are live, and some synth parts. That Downward Spiral era version of NIN was GOAT: Trent, Danny Lohner from Skrew , Robin Finck, and then both Jim Wooley (RIP) on synths and Chris Vrenna on drums were poached from my favorite (and criminally fucking underrated) “industrial” band, Die Warzau. That live band was juggernaut.

Seeing NIN in a club was crazy! Most of us in Phoenix didn’t hear of NIN until around the first Lollapalooza tour—the very first show of which was in Phoenix. I wasn’t there, but the show was outside in the summer, and NIN’a gear literally melted and malfunctioned in the second song and they had to end the set. People were pissed. So when they finally returned to AZ, people were hyped AF to see it, and NIN had gotten pretty big by then.

It was a warmup show for the tour, and announced day of show. It was at the Roxy in Phoenix, which has a crazy fucking story for why it doesn’t exist anymore.

It was St Patrick’s Day 1994, so people were pretty tossed. My friend and I were 15, we had an older friend drop us off at the club without tickets, and we looked for scalpers, found some, and bought tix to get in.

We were packed into this club like fucking sardines, and Phoenix is HOT, even in March.
And here’s the kicker: there’s no opening band, and while the showtime is advertised as 8:00 PM, we found out later that Trent thought it was supposed to be 11:00 PM <lol>

So we’re packed in there, waiting, for hours. Like 3 1/2 hours. And after a time, the mood in the club got real ugly. People were fucking pissed.
I literally remember thinking, “I think I am about to get caught in a riot.”
If someone had said or done the wrong thing, that whole club would’ve erupted.

When NIN finally hit the stage the crowd went nuts, and that mosh pit was roughhhhh. I remember the synth parts being really low in the mix that night, so every song sounded very guitar-driven and heavy.

I was hooked after that. Saw them 2 more times that year because they were so great live.

I saw Guns n Roses probably 10 ish years ago, and in notorious GnR fashion, the opening band came on around 8.
and absolutely sucked.

9pm no GnR. DJ or something (playlist?) does some songs.
10. No GNR
Somewhere around 10:15 opening band comes back up and plays the same bad 30 minute set.

11pm no GnR. Venue stopped selling beer BEFORE GnR even took the stage. This is the point where I was like, wow, this shit could go sideways now. These people are not happy, kinda drunk and sobering up. (Not a problem for me, I was on acid)

Around 11:30 they finally show up and play for nearly 3 hours straight.

It was 3 am when we left. Thanks Axl ya childish asshole.

______

There was an interview with Trent resnor I saw back in 1993 1994 or so. Interview asked: "so what do you guys do to get into such a frenzied state before your show?"

Trent : "Drugs."

Didn’t GnR have a riot at some show of theirs in maybe ‘92 or so?

I really liked the Roxy the one time I was there. I dunno if you clicked that link I posted about why it closed down, but basically some dude got shot in a nearby parking lot after going to a hip hop show there, wasn’t killed initially but crawled into a nearby neighborhood looking for help, chose a random house and crawled to the front door. This poor dude literally died on the doorstep, clawing at the front door for someone to help him.
—By a crazy coincidence, the house he chose belonged to the head of the AZ Liquor Control Board or whatever it’s called, and the dude yanked the Roxy’s liquor license.

I have been to the Roxy. Interesting place. Went once with a friend visiting NY from out of town.

I used to DJ in NYC, just kind of lucked upon gigs in Limelight and Tunnel, then Soundfactory and Exit. Seen some shit. Limelight and Tunnel kept an ambulance waiting on sight for ODs. Was DJing in Tunnel (chandelier room) when cops came thru ordered music off and all lights on and made probably 2000 or so people sit criss cross applesauce on the floor while they went around looking for someone. I was probably one of the most sober people in the room because I usually tried to stay coherent until after my set, but I'm sure there were a bunch of people bugging the fuck out. I once did lines off a record while it was playing in the main room in limelight. DJ Gonzo was on, I had finished an earlier set. I was trying to play it cool like I wasn't pretty twisted already and line that thing up as it came around, make sure not to miss but also not nudge the record and make it skip.

Guns had a major riot in St Louis where people where ripping chairs out of the ground and lighting shit on fire. Idiots.

I slept thru the riots at Woodstock 99. I did see fires during the RHCP closing set but didn't think much of it.woke up and walked around what looked like post apocalypse setting.

Glad I did crazy shit when I was young.
Makes it easier to settle into being a crotchety old man.

You're not going to go to a concert in 2 months time because your cat might be ill?

I do not have these issues.

Was meant to see them in the early 2000s, but he decided to OD the day of the show, so never did.
I saw them live a few times in the 2000s. Easily the best live performance I’ve ever seen. I was like warm on NIN before the first show I saw them I fell in love with them after.

I kind of doubt he’s still as good live because now he’s really getting up there in age but I’m sure it’s still good

How far away is the concert?

Cats should be fine. They're going to have a tummy ache whether you're there or not.

You're not going to come back and find them dead unless you're leaving for weeks.

Worst case scenario they make a mess while you're gone.

The right thing to do is not take your cats with you for the show.
Cats can absolutely be on their own a couple of days, just leave them plenty of water and enough food. You will traumatise them more travelling with them.

Go to the show.

I've seen him several times too, actually woke up with the new NIN track in my head this morning so hopefully the vet can prescribe something.

I can't leave them with anyone and don't trust a cat sitter to not watch that they don't get out.

If I could convince husband, this would be the absolute best solution. We were gone for an event for 9ish hours yesterday, we had different food timer set ups where the lids lift and they have each other so they're not going to get lonely.

Pets are family. Take good care of them.

Hopefully things work out so you can do both.

Jelly you saw him with Bowie, that would have been brilliant. His "last" tour in 2009 I saw him and Gary Numan who is one of his heroes showed up unexpectedly (to the audience) to do Cars. Which I fangirled into overdrive having them both on the same stage.

Needless to say it wasn't his last tour and I've seen him serveral times since.
