A good 40 will help someone’s draft stock or get them picked up as an udfa sure. But it’s ultimately a novelty stat. Route running and contested catch ability aka tape are infinitely more important.
I’d try one of those speed merchants as a DB during preseason and see what they can do there.

This. If he can get off the line without being jammed. And I'm not sure if DBs will try to jam him b/c if they miss, he's gone. But if he gets off hte line, even a handful of plays a game you can use him to pull a safety help over to his side of the field and/or open up underneath routes.

I can tell you this without a doubt. If Al Davis were alive, this dude would probably be the Raiders 1st or 2nd round pick. Darius Hayward Bey....

FINALLY....somebody who gets it, cool~~~~

Would ya believe Al Davis got that speed thing from watching his fav baseball team the Brooklyn Dodgers as a kid, they were always the faster team, so why not in football....once he got older.

Bullet Bob Hayes was actually a fullback at FAMU, the Cowboys convereted him to WR which gave us the zone defense because nobody could run with him.

That all depends on are you looking for a possesion receiver or a speed receiver.

Try having a receiver ganh where nobody can break a 4.55 40, so the D plays up tight knowig nobody there can get by them. What does that do to your running game?

Every team needs a Randy Moss, Tyreek Hill, somebody who backs off defenders

If a WR can't break a 4.70 in the 40, good luck. I know, but what about Jerry Rice, ha~~~~

No team is fielding a group of WRs that can’t break 4.55. The league average 40 is 4.8-4.5. Guys that break 4.3 aren’t automatically game breakers. Of the top 20 WRs last year only 3 were sub 4.4 guys(chase, jameo, olave). The guys with the most 40+ yard receptions were JSN(8), Nico Collins, Alex Pierce and Jameson Williams(all with 5). Williams being the only one there considered a speed demon. The fastest recorded 40 times of all time are pretty much all bums except for Chris Johnson.

If anything 40 time is more indicative of what kind of WR someone is versus the quality of wr. Teams also play more 2 deep safeties now, making it almost impossible to take the top off a defense. It’s also why we’re seeing a bit of a running game resurgence.

I was a RB/DB, when facing a WR faster than myself I had to play back knowing if playing tight and gets behind me it;s over.

Now when a DB plays back there is that vacated area, a place RB/QB love.

Now if facing a cat I can run with there I am in his face, if a run there I am.

See how it works?

anyone remember John Ross from Washington when he ran a blazing 4.2 40 at the combine?

Yup. Was drafted in the top 10 because of that by the Bengals ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Speaking of Bengals anyone remember Chris Collingsworth before he became an announcer? 6700 yards and 36 tds back when teams could barely complete a forward pass. Probably would be unstoppable in today's league.

Ochocinco (GOAT Mexican player) ran a 4.57. The 40 yard time is overrated to a certain extent.

So why do teams not have a gang of cats who can break 4.55, which was my point.

20 Olympic sprinters have played NFL football, all would destroy Chris Johnson, as would Randy Moss, Tyreek Hill, Deion Sanders, Darrell Green.

We see receivers catching the long ball in about every game, so.....2 deep safeties don't mean shit.

The Bengals also brought in Olympic sprinter Tommie Smith, a non footballer, yep.....bust.

One of their best ever receivers was Isacc Curtis a 9,3 cat at Cal.

Collinsworth was a Florida state 100 champ a 9.7 cat.

Speaking of slow 40's. Here's my list of NFL wrs who ran slow 40's and still were elite at their position

2. Mike Evans 4.53
3. DeAndre Hopkins 4.57
4. Jerry Rice 4.71

This is why I almost always prefer the monster X receivers that will run you over instead of run by/around you, and if youre able to stay with them youve still got to best them on 50/50 balls.

What do I give a shit about Olympic sprinters?

Tell that to rodgers, Lawrence and mahomes

“"I mean, that's the league right now," New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "It's a lot of umbrella coverages, a lot of soft quarters coverages and two-high [safeties].

"That's what we saw a lot of in Week 1 and Week 2. There wasn't a lot of single-safety. When there was, we took a couple shots. But the league is really trending towards more umbrella defenses."

Said Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence: "Even the teams that have typically been single-high [safety] teams are playing more shell, which just changes your passing attack a little bit. Not to say you can't attack that still, but it definitely changes than if it's [single] safety."

Quarterbacks have faced coverages featuring two deep safeties on 45.9% of dropbacks this season, according to ESPN Analytics/NFL Next Gen Stats. That's the highest rate since the data was first tracked in 2016.

In theory, those coverages are intended to prevent chunk plays in the passing game, which are fundamental to being a highly productive offense.

This season, quarterbacks are completing 66.1% of attempts, putting 2024 on track to have one of the highest figures in league history. It sounds counterintuitive -- passing yards are down even while more passes are being completed -- but it speaks to the impact coverages are having on quarterbacks.

Teams have taken stock and are throwing checkdowns and shorter attempts. It's further demonstrated in the steady decline in air yards per pass attempt, which has fallen from an average of 8.1 in 2017 to 7.5 last season. So far in 2024, the average is 7.0.

"Teams are going to make you drive the entire field," Mahomes said. "There are opportunities out there, you just have to execute it at a higher level," Mahomes said. "[But] there's not as many as maybe I've had previously."

So yeah, 2 deep safeties actually do mean shit.
