Man I love the NFL Top 100. They do a tremendous job with that show.

Some guys who’d be playing for a roster spot in the pre-season in a normal year making some business decisions here. Taking 150k to “opt out” of the season due to Covid

Obviously not all, or even a majority, but some are mighty suspect haha
Unless I'm mixing up sports my understanding is that the 150k is an advance on next year's salary. So if they don't make the team next season they have to pay the money back.

Oof. That would not be going over well

Some washout who never actually did jack in college isn’t gonna pay the team that cut him 6 figures and be in debt (cause he definitely spent at least most of it) as he finds a personal trainer job at Planet Fitness.

I don't know the rules on guys getting cut before the payout so I'm sure a few will try and take advantage. But with a wave of opt outs guys that wouldn't have made the roster before will have an opportunity to actually get on a 53 man roster this year. I imagine most guys will be working towards that over a small one time payment (vs playing in the league) that the team will try and recoup

-they also increased the PS to 16 players, so this really is the best chance for bubble guys to stick around a team for a year

Definitely. The risk reward factor is way on the chance of making the team, even if not a long career or even above NFL minimum as a special teamer.

But some guys in their heart just know the 6 dudes ahead of him are all better, and that he won’t be able to catch one. So take the 6 figures and try again next year with the same result of getting cut. At least you got a very nice salary once for being a camp invite.

My highschool Social Studies teacher had a pre season/training camp with an nfl team. He was QB 5 on the depth chart and knew he didn’t have a chance of making backup or even the practice squad guy. He just threw a nice deep ball so was good practice to gauge the deeper wide receivers but still said it was really cool to be around all that for a couple months. Why wouldn’t a guy like that with a family not take the 50% house down payment instead?

The NFL owners get away with murder. They’re going to allow some players to make terrible financial decisions knowingly.

Just saw that. I feel like the teams just getting thinner and thinner. The LB position is going to be a big problem, especially against that ravens team where you need that position to over perform to contain the QB

So for clarity, those who opt out for this season will get $0 for this season or is there some sort of minimum amount they can collect?

Chung throws in the towel.

Lawrence to the Pats taking shape.
