I would have rather they traded him. He's never done anything in the playoffs, same as the Steelers during his era. He is 30 and constantly has injury problems late in seasons. His value to the franchise was his trade value for the future, this team ain't winning shit in the next 3 years.
Meh. Letting elite edge rushers walk is silly. They are paying jack shit for a QB, there is jack shit reason to let him walk. You also cannot trade without a dance partner. Very few dance partners are willing to give up premium draft capital and also offer a new top dollar contract.

Id limit Watt’s snaps, but I sure as fuck wouldnt have traded him in their situation.

TJ's awesome but that's an insane contract for someone that is 30 and has never won a playoff game.

It's gonna bite them in the ass in the next couple of years.
They dont have a quarterback, or much of any star players. Likely wont have any QB contract to deal with for several yesrs. Easy to eat this deal in a short period.

Rodgers is fine imo
I watched every Jets game last year and i’m not joking.

But going forward, TJ could have netted them insane draft compensation. I’m not saying they’re stupid for extending him, that’s just a LOT of money

It's not silly when you are not going to compete for anything in the years left of his competitive prime. The Steelers formula of the highest paid (and older) defense plus a patch work offense does not work in the modern NFL. The team is in badly need of a reset top to bottom. What they are trying this year is just more of the same, it's not going to work.

There would have been teams that would have made offers for Watt, even if it was down to a 2nd rounder. So yeah it's a waste to keep him if you can get anything for him. And if there wasn't, make him play the last year on his deal and franchise him next year.

I'm hoping for a crash and burn type year. They need to take their QB of the future next year, which they are planning to do, but it looks like they think they can trade up instead of finishing low which isn't guaranteed. There could be all QB needy teams ahead of them next year, you just don't know.

Lay off the weed bruh

Rodgers is making $13mil. Thats basically a rookie QB deal. If you feel like you can win with Rodgers, and imo the Steelers can assuming health, why would you trade a game wrecking talent at a premium position?

I dont think most teams are giving up the draft capital for Watt along with the contract. That minimizes his trade value in itself. Then you add that although hes a game wrecker and players are having longer careers, he is still on the wrong side of 30 its diminished further.

In their spot, I wouldnt have given up that talent level for a first round pick. Especially in this QB class.

Its like were pretending the Steelers arent, somehow, a highly competitive and often playoff team even with god awful QB play. Even an average season from Rodgers makes them scary as hell.

Fucking LMAO @ accepting a second round pick for a yearly DPOY caliber player. What a silly suggestion.

steelers will win 9 games make the playoffs and lose their first playoff game. Watt may or may not play since he's been hurt a lot lately.

LOL Now we're blaming linebackers for a team not winning playoff games? I read dumb shit on the internet every day, this is a special kind of stupid.
You can quote me next time pussy.
I’m not “blaming” him; just saying it’s a broken team and its not like TJ has proven to be some game-wrecker in the post-season that can carry a poor offense.

Bite them how? 3 years is an incredibly lenient term. There's almost no way they have to pay big money to a QB, and a lot of these old guys will be coming off the books soon anyway. You can argue that the Steelers have spent a lot to finish 10-7, but this deal itself is great.
Draft. Capital.
I think the Garrett contract is insane too.

If these were recently successful franchises paying one of their stars, fine. But spending a ton of money on “stars” is not a luxury mediocre teams should be indulging in.

They would have gotten way more than a first for Watt.

You guys can say what you want, but if this deal were such a homerun it would have been finalized 4 months ago

You weren’t the only one I was referring to. Though you did have the most childish reaction.

Here, I’m quoting you directly now …Feel better?
The point about them not having a QB was about Rogers taking nearly a rookie type salary. Not about his ability. Without another injury, he should clearly be better than what they’ve been working with the last few years.

I dont think its ever a home run when a player becomes the highest paid player at a position, same with free agency deals, theyre rarely ever a home run. It's a premium on a position due to scarcity which inflates the value.
