American involvement in The war in Afghanistan will pass the Vietnam war by next month. It is heading to be 18 years by October. It’s actually insane that the war has lasted this long. When it started I was only a child heading into kindergarten and now I am fully grown adult with a useless degree but stable job

What’s even more insane is that the war has no means to an end. The taliban are apparently stronger than ever and contest more land than ever before. The afghan government without American aid have admitted they could only last 6 months against the taliban. What do you guys make of this. Do you think the war will end in the next 5 years or is Afghanistan forever doomed as the graveyard of empires. If it does end do you think a new super power will look to take over ie China. The British, Russia and lets be honest America have all failed. America and Russia have wasted so much money on the stability of this country. Will the taliban win (honestly seems like they might) and if so can they co-exist as a government party that will lead to Afghanistan’s prosperity with its neighbours of Pakistan, China (small border) and Iran.

Amazing 2001 feels like just 9 years ago.

Do you have recolections of 9/11?

I was 18 and a half years old. But I dont feel I matured a lot since then.

I didn’t understand what terrorism exactly was at the time but the first videos that popped in the news regarding the 9/11 attack was certainly one of the only recollections I have in my early school years. Those planes flying into those buildings.... man I could never forget it

One day Americans will learn that wars on nouns like drugs and terrorism are futile wastes of money.

Oh who am I kidding? No they won't.

Really dont think our goal is to win. That was the case with Vietnam and what Ellsberg revealed when he leaked what would become known as the Pentagon Papers.

It's just a cash machine for those there and it keeps other powers from coming in. Plus the heroin.

Lucrative war contracts for some, control heroin ...

Why would you ever want to leave??

There has to be an end point tho. They can’t keep pouring $45 billion annually on this forever. If so what a sad world we live in. What’s the fucking point of being called a super power if you can’t do shit other than cause chaos to a third world country for Close to 18 years

America lost because of their diplomatic incompetence with Pakistan. The Taliban can freely move from Pakistan to Afghanistan and back, probably with Pakistans help in some ways.

They needed to reign in Pakistan and they didn't

Why? Says who?

You're right. Expect that number to rise.

Warmer getting warmer

From what I have witnessed, this is the point.

What’s insane is that before taliban rule Afghanistan was the largest supplier or opiates, during taliban regime they deemed the selling of drugs as “unislamic” and banned it effectively reducing 99% of production. They were kicked out of power. Afghanistan then took back the mantle of opiate production again. Nowadays it’s reported that taliban tax the warlords who profit form the drugs for funding. What a weird world we fucking live in

It’s definitely clear Pakistan support taliban due to Pashtun relations and to prevent growing influence from India. You just think this could have been sorted by now smh

Same thing happened in Indochina. Check out Alfred McCoys book. This now is a rerun.

Of course it has a means to an end. Alexander the Great conquered half the planet and stopped all insurgency movements with his most advanced technology being the spear. Genghis Khan's most advanced technology was the bow and arrow and the horse and he did the same thing. We really only have the stomach to do what it takes to win wars when we fight larger, more dangerous wars like WW II. And there's nothing wrong with that; war, and what it takes to win wars, is evil. An evil that is only justified by self defense against something close to an existential threat -- and that's not Afghanistan or Iraq. That's Japan in WW II. Or the South in the Civil War.

If we're not going to stoop to the level of brutality that it took to win WW II or anything close to that then we should leave. And we should absolutely not stoop to that level of brutality. Iraq and Afghanistan aren't enough of a threat to justify that kind of monstrosity against human kind. We should leave instead.

I did not realize Vietnam was 18 years. I thought it was like 10 or 12

That's starting with advisors etc under Eisenhower and ending with Ford.

This war in Afghanistan started with a bigger bang

I don’t have those facts but do you know when the US heroin epidemic started again? My guess would be just after that invasion

The stats show that the opioid related deaths in America are increasing on a year by year basis since 1999 2 years before the war however majority of the opioids produced by Afghanistan go through Europe as opposed to America. Tho I am sure they do eventually reach America as they are by far the largest producers of it
