New STAR WARS Trilogy (Update: Rian Johnson Says His Trilogy is Still Happening)

giphy.gif

I have no agenda. I'm just here to talk about Star Wars... & to be honest, the trolls have run me out. It's only comments such as these that offer me a little bit of hope that maybe even me & the resistance can have a decent convo about our differences.
I don't know if this means anything coming from me, but: You've acquitted yourself with much MORE respect than you've received.

Funny you left out the word "more" while making a case that I'm f*cked up.

Happy Valentine's Day

Holy shit, I did leave out "more."

I don't think it's fucked up for fans to talk about shit they love. It makes more sense than to keep going about something you hate, or something you refuse to do. No, I wasn't saying you're fucked up. That's not something you can tell a person and have it mean much of anything. You've played against the hater's game better than I have.

Thank you... I think you were just being funny... but your point that I "assume my credibility" in these threads has been hard won... & anyone who frequents these threads knows I'm serious about it & know a bit of what I'm talking about.

I'm not trying to come off as some Pablo Hildalgo... but on the real... I'm no casual either. Far from it. So I can present myself as (if nothing else) at least a mediocre to medium high level knowledge kind of guy. I'm happy to field some questionz if anyone wants to dispute it.

though my history here has all ready done that... but any wayz.. I dunno... I gotta get my mac on now... it's fooking valentines day & my wife just got home so I'll holla acha'll later.

It's not just winning respect. I was talking about giving respect, that you give more than you get.

But yeah, I don't take what I say too seriously so no one should either.

I'm reading ROTS solely on the strength of @KnightTemplar. There would have to be a really compelling reason for me to delve into either other Prequel. You can see my half-formed thoughts on ROTS here.

I seem to recall having read at least part of the Thrawn trilogy by Zahn, and I remember some pretty solid writing there. I think the best version was the comic book adaptation, of which I only read this:

Olivier Vatine & Fred Blanchard drew this part of the 1995 adaptation and the art is pure tits (cover excluded):

Killian Plunkett and Edvin Biukovic (RIP) were my favorite comic book SW artists, but Vatine and Blanchard were unbelievably rich. You should see their vision of Kasshyyykkkkkkyykkkuykysadlak sdaljnajsd danl.
Zahn is writing the new Thrawn books too, I liked the original Thrawn trilogy better, so far anyway. The 3rd book is to be released later this year for the new canon series.

That's actually the whole problem with the EU... everything can be made to be like it never happened.

That's why I embrace the canon project that Disney implemented. This is a beautiful thing. Bitch all you want about the EU being swept under the rug, but it has been that way the whole time... look at the beautiful situation we have now.... Everything you see labeled canon is guaranteed to exist forever.

Excuse me while I shed a tear for the beauty of this.

No Canon suggests this about Luke... so it never happened. I'm so very sorry... & Jade Skywalker bless... but fooking so happy we now have a guarantee with all the new Canon... & so lets rejoice that instead of get down on them for not including all the crazy whacked out sh*t in EU. A lot of cool stuff... but you & I both know all that sh*t wouldn't stick. Good for them for saying this is what's real.

We’ve talked about this before and I know you’re a fan (which is why it’s genuinely hard for me understand your point of view). The character of Luke resonated with an entire generation and Johnson tore that down just for the hell of it.
I do like that there is actual canon now. I think that’s cool and I’m on board with it. I’m just disappointed with the changes Kennedy allowed Johnson to make to established characters.

What you're asking for is fucking tough, dude.

I think we're in agreement that we both want good stories with the characters we love. It's just that I believe TLJ succeeded in making him interesting, flawed, and still powerful. I think it's a wonderful arc.
Man, I hear you, I just don’t think it’s thats tough. He’s a deep, complex character as is. There’s no need to reimagine him. No need to “subvert our expectations.”
I understand some of this is subjective. I found Luke in TLJ to be uninteresting, far too deeply flawed, and physically quite weak. It was one of the biggest cinematic disappointments of my life. Yeah, I realize that’s a first world problem lol.

N word, it is! You mayn't think but it do!

The proof is that you and I swear on our opinions. You hated it, I loved it. If anything, you should be the one admitting it's hard to writing a compelling character but that's okay.

It's hard because no one knows what will work. You want fan service without disrespecting the character and that's not easy because there's no dramatic structure there. It's just porn. Anyone can write a Mary Sue character, and Rey gets heat for that all the time. Meanwhile Luke gets tested and comes through at the end, but that's not good enough! This critical juxtaposition proves to me: people don't know what they want. They only know what they don't want.

Can you honestly say TFA Han is depicted better than TLJ Luke?

And it's not just the writing itself that's hard. But the backlash too. Lucas didn't sell out because he ran out of love or ability. We know why he left. If you get it wrong, fans get acrimonious. It's not just a fault of writing, but they call it purposeful sandbagging. They hate you for it.

New STAR WARS Trilogy Announced, Rian Johnson to Write and Direct First Movie

wKdM3ws.jpg

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is expanding a galaxy far, far away.

The writer-director will create a new trilogy set in the Star Wars universe and will write and direct the first installment, Lucasfilm announced Thursday. Ram Bergman, Johnson's longtime producer partner, will produce.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

The new movies will be separate from the continuing Skywalker saga and "Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored," according to the announcement.

The move is a strong vote of confidence by Disney and Lucasfilm on Johnson's work in the upcoming Last Jedi, which opens Dec. 15.

During an earnings call Thursday, Disney CEO Bob Iger said in addition to the new trilogy, the Star Wars universe would be expanding with a live-action TV show, which would be available on a Disney streaming service, set to launch in 2019.

The new trilogy comes as Lucasfilm also has Solo: A Star Wars Story out May 25, 2018 and director J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX out Dec. 20, 2019.

Disney Announces New 'Star Wars' Trilogy with Rian Johnson to Write and Direct First Installment

I won't touch it with a ten foot poll. The Last Jedi was the biggest piece of garbage in the Star Wars universe.

I would have forgiven the many, many sins of TLJ if Luke hadn’t been a “Force projection” I actually don’t think it’s hard to write a compelling character. Writers do it all the time. Luke was never a Mary Sue. I agree with you that Han was bad in TFA. Not as bad as Luke in TLJ, but bad. TFA was WAY too derivative. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves. It actually undid everything from the OT.
My preference would have been to leave the Skywalker Saga and jump forward 1000 years or go to another galaxy far, far away.

I guess I'm just not that bothered that Luke isn't the superhero I made him out to be. Upon first viewing I was pretty shocked... but the more I looked into it the more I saw that Luke was never that guy I made him out to be. He rocked up for about 4 years... & did some really cool stuff... but he was never a Jedi master... so then he ended up like that. So What? It may be a little too close to real life for a sci fi adventure, but I don't mind it. I don't need Luke to be that guy for me to enjoy Star Wars. They still might make him that guy as a force ghost though. Yoda's lightning might be some foreshadowing.

Once you stop cringing about "not my Luke"... and accept it... you watch the movie again as it was intended... & the whole movie takes on a new aura. It's a great movie.

I know it's hard for you guyz to wrap your head around... but we are only 2/3rds through the story. I've heard from plenty of your fellow resistors that y'all don't think there's any way it can all come together & make more sense... but they had an outline for this trilogy... & it was a plan that was set into action... so lets give that a chance to play out.

It's not dead if it still shits out Franklins every time you hit it.

I like Rian Johnson and obviously he hit The Last Jedi out of the park, so if we have to have more Star Wars (and we do) may as well be him.

<Huh2>

just grabbing random facts from books or whatever no else knows about and conveniently trying to justify these flaws in this movie still does not make it a good movie. making excuses for the movie does NOT make it facts.

for the ppl that liked it good for you, but don't try to justify out of character writing. luke trying to kill and giving up on his nephew so fast and giving up hope (a new HOPE)
he has been a jedi for decades up till that point in his life and to just forget the ways of the jedi, to be overcome by fear that you try to murder your nephew because of visions. how do u forget the code and path you've lived by for decades in an instant?
this is just one thing to pick out from

TLJ is a god awful fucking retarded movie. I’ll not even start complaining about the dozens of idiotic things about that movie. It takes an essay to list everything that is fucking retarded about TLJ.

There are dozens of videos on YouTube from people listing everything that is just plain retarded about TLJ. Hours of arguments.

Seems like you are a big SW nerd, so you should be mad about this. They ruined your life. Me, I don’t give a shit. It’s just an idiotic popcorn movie. Only thing that pissed me off is that I expected more, but, in the words of Han Solo

Harrison should have been in TLJ, he had the stones to tell someone like Rian

And I quite Han to Lucas

“You can write this shit Goerge, but I can’t say it”

Ruined his life by ... getting him to enjoy a popcorn movie. That's a thing now?

Smart enough to apologize, so he blesses them back.

But it’s not a great movie. There’s SO MUCH wrong with it. Canto Bight. Rose. Rey. Oh my god Rey. She’s horrible. They have no idea what to do with Finn. Bombs don’t fall in space. Mary Poppins in space. Really, really forced humor. I mean, it’s objectively bad. Luke is just one of the issues, but my word it’s a terrible film.

Funny how this thread went from "Oh hell yeah!" before the movie came out to "Ugh god no" after TLJ came out.

Nice job Rian, nice job.
