I was thinking about a similar religious analogy (since religions and ideologies are similar in nature). It's sort of like how Christianity (or Islam or any other religion for that matter) has different denominations, but in order to understand any one of them, it of course helps to realize that they are rooted in Christianity and an understanding of Christianity provides for a framework to understand them in.

and if you don't even recognize that a denomination is actually a denomination of a larger, older, ideology, then what hope is there to understand it to any depth?

Again, here's an easy example. As a white person, people don't throw our resumes in the trash because the name sounds too black/ethnic. That's an advantage.

Here's another example. As a white person, housing developments aren't going to deny me a home because of my skin color. That happens all the time for minorities (again, see Trump). That's an advantage.

I'm a manager for a bank, and we don't know peoples ethnicity here when they apply for loans. I also don't throw resumes in the garbage due to a persons name. I want the best person possible regardless of race, creed or religion. And that's not because I'm some great noble guy... when you are a manager you want people you don't have to babysit who won't cause you headaches. Nobody in their right mind would do the things you are stating there. Just my experience.

White privilege as a term has origins in the Civil Rights movement. Marxism is spread into so many different branches and philosophies that you can practically fit anything under the umbrella you're opening. 911 is Marxism. Public schools are Marxism. Ambulances are Marxism. It's fucking silly.

That's great. People absolutely do the things I'm talking about. Nobody is saying everyone does it, but it happens all the time. I've literally worked for someone before who didn't want blacks coming into his bar. He would ask me to stop them at the door and make up excuses for why they couldn't come in. Housing developments get caught telling minorities that there are no open units when there are.

It happens. And white privilege as a whole is less insidious than pure racism. It's more of the passive benefits of being in the white majority of a Western nation than active racism.

You'd probably need to compare it to other races as well in order for it to be considered a white privilege.

I'm just saying I have worked in the industry for 20 years and I have never experienced it. Maybe it's because of where I work and live but it's just never even been a topic. Perhaps its not as prevalent as people claim. An outlier for some reason all of the sudden is claimed to be industry wide. The only colour I have ever known anyone to care about was green.

What would you do if all the resumes looked equally good and they had a black, brown, Asian and white sounding name? Would you look at the race of your other co workers and have that affect your judgment? Would progressive media levels of oppression have an impact on your decision making? Or would you put all the names in a hat and have a random draw?
