New Oliver Stone movie: Snowden

It's certainly not a movie for everyone but I thought Josh Brolin was magical. It was a pretty direct telling of the George W. life story.

A "pretty direct telling". . .

I have to admit, I have to be at least a little suspicious of Stone's bias considering his strong political leanings.

I guess with directors you'll have a few misses but when a guy has JFK, Natural Born Killers, W., Platoon and Wall Street on his resumé, I think it's fair we give him the benefit of the doubt.

Why didn't Oliver Stone have a helicopter shot down in Platoon like he did in Born on the Fourth of July? BTW I already know the answer to the question. I believe Stone is a good director and storyteller if you can accept his views with a grain of salt.

I guess I'm using the wrong term in direct. I mean it was pretty in your face in terms of story telling.

Honestly I don't know the answer Platoon was out a couple years before Born on the Fourth of July, wasn't it?

Anyhow, in regards to his political leanings, I understand if he's interjecting his bias into his films but I don't believe it influences me too much in terms of enjoying his story.

Thought W. was just dull and uninspiring. Brolin and Banks did okay with what they had, but I don't think they had that much. Thought the earlier stuff like the opening scene with the frat and the early courtship of the Bushes and the anger between father and son was handled better than the sequences once George W. was president.

Stone is one of those dispiriting cases because, while he obviously is a very talented/capable storyteller/filmmaker, he hasn't made a very good movie since 1995, in my opinion. That movie was Nixon, which I thought was great.

U-Turn in 1997 was pretty good.

Any Given Sunday has its moments.

But it's pretty telling that you have Wall Street, Platoon, Salvador, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK in the early part of his career and then W., World Trade Center, Alexander, Savages, and Money Never Sleeps in the more recent years.

There's definitely been a drop in quality. No doubt about it. We actually see this with a lot of directors for whatever reason. Stone has made it out better than many but he definitely hasn't fared as well as Scorsese and Spielberg, who rose to power right around the same time.

I'm actually looking forward to this film.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is definitely the best casting choice.

There are many ways to look at the story of Edward Snowden and whether you view him as patriot or traitor. I’m aware there are a lot of aspects of the story that are not discussed in the film such as Snowden allegedly selling info to the Chinese and Russian government in return for asylum. This is why the interpretation of Snowden is entirely up to the viewer. As far as this film goes, it is a very good effort by Oliver Stone with a great performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Oliver Stone’s style can feel heavy handed at times but the end product is a solid biopic and an cinematic effort that can’t be overlooked. Snowden is a very thought provoking film and is guaranteed to spark a national conversation of legality vs morality.
