I'm wondering if age and wear will start becoming a factor for Dake. He's 32 and has been at this a long time, chasing Burroughs for years before finally getting it done against him 2 years ago. Burroughs himself was 32 when Dake dethroned him at 74. Nolf is 27 and lost to Dake 1-2 and 2-4 last year, after getting teched by him in 2021. Maybe it's coming up on Nolf's time in the sun.

For sure. Guy is probably top 5 in the world at his weight. Dake isn’t that dominant to where it’s open and shut. Dake is still the favorite here.

Dake vs Burroughs is a bit of an odd situation. After graduating I think Dake went head-to-head with Burroughs for 3 years (no doubt Burroughs ran him out the weight class, though). It was pretty dumb that they did the challenge tournament on the same day as the final, where Dake would have to go through guys like Howe and Taylor just to wrestle a best of 3 with a fresh Burroughs. 2017 was his year to avoid that but lost on criteria to Burroughs at the Open.

Dake and Burroughs are quite a bit different, too. Dake relies less on speed than Burroughs, so I think his style will hold up well against time.

Will be interesting to see what happens. I'm amazed Burroughs has still been getting it done at 79 against 20-somethings. Moving up from 74 seems to have bought him a few more years but he'll be 35 come this year's worlds and is about as old as you can possibly be at his level. Blows my mind that he won his first worlds in 2011 and has been at or near the top every year since. Absolutely legendary career. Like how have this dude's knees and hips held out this long.

Looks like it's Nolf and Marsteller at 74 and 79 again, to face Dake and Burroughs at Final X in June. J'Den to face Snyder at 97. And Steveson with the 10-0 tech over Gwiazdowski in the final. I wonder if he'll really do the WWE thing if he wins Olympic gold again next year. He's only 22 and will still be in his athletic prime come 2032 Olympics. The way he's going, he could become the first male FS wrestler with 4 Olympic golds. He could actually go for 5 at age 36.

First observation that comes to mind is the fact that it's greco, and the greco-roman field in the US is a lot less 'thick' than it is in freestyle or folkstyle, so to speak, so the chance of parity between a 'high schooler' and 'olympian' is less unusual.

Second thing that comes to mind is, Sancho pinned Adams first. Let's be real that match was already over at 1:40, I don't care what the ref says. (Merkel/reverse headlock is a great move, not just in pure wrestling, but in sub grappling and vale tudo as well; much application against the cage for example).

Many of comments in the top of the page discuss the unsportsmanlike Sancho was at the end of the match.

But, the further you scroll, there will be people that state the same thing you did.

I made this post after coming across this comment "I'll be the first to say. Looks like the kid knew he was kinda fucked with that deep headlock. He knew his hips were outta position and that he was going to go for a ride or was going to be taken to his back. Looks like he intentionally went "limp". This is my assessment as a 2002 NCAA champion." - Rob (with a Lehigh avatar). Shall I assume it's Rob Rohn?

For me, I would assume that if a wrestler loses consciousness during the match, the ref would have ended the match, rather than just put a wrestler on the injury clock.

If it happens as a result of a legal move I would say so too. But of course the character of officiating can vary wildly.

You gotta think about the moral hazard that is introduced by giving people free passes for failing to keep their wits about them. Knowing how to apply the presh is part of the highest refinement of technique.

Years ago, I was reffing a middle school match. Kid was on his back from a half nelson. As I counted "three" for back points, he screamed: "I Can't Breathe!!!!!" I slapped the mat. Which led to the kid's mom to yell at me that her kid couldn't breathe, so I couldn't call it a pin.

I decided after that dual meet that I was done reffing and stuck to coaching only.

Classic stunt. If they can yell about how hard they are being choked, you aren't choking them hard enough.

Refs have a thankless job and that's a tough situation. Chokes seem to be a grey area but if you go out from a legal move (especially with arm in), it's shocking a ref would allow injury time out before allowing it to continue.

Competing at a greco tourny in the late 90's (as a greco noob), I got taken down and immediately bottomed out as I had been taught to do. But other guy was trying to turn me with a deep crossface over my chin (no arm in) and his forearm slipped under my chin, compressing my windpipe. I started gurgling and looked up at the ref to complain, but doing so allowed other guy's forearm to slip even deeper and the ref just stared at me without doing anything. So I put my head back down and continued trying to escape. But the choke put me out and the sound of the ref slapping the mat woke me up a few seconds later.

I was too disoriented to complain but I asked the ref what happened and he just said, "you got pinned." A few minutes later after coming to my senses and realizing I'd gone out, I asked the other guy off the mat if he realized he'd put me out. He was just like, "well, I felt you kind of go limp but the ref didn't say anything so I just turned you and pinned you." Yeah thanks MFer. I never got a chance for payback because in his first match the next weekend, he got suplexed onto his head, injuring his neck and sidelining him for the rest of the season.

In 8+ years of competing in wrestling/Judo/BJJ, I took plenty of Ls but that's still the only time I've been choked out in competition.
