NBA NBA Thread: Gamble Gate

Michael Jackson, Hulk Hogan, and Ali were all magnitudes bigger than Jordan. Jordan was an American phenomenon where the first 3 were world wide. The NBA likes to tout Jordan as the big thing but China was in love with Yao Ming and Kobe Bryant. Not to say Jordan wasn't famous at an insane level. Hulk Hogan was known by everyone, even if they didnt watch pro wrestling. Michael Jordan was just a black dude to people who didnt watch basketball.

Jordan was THE marketed athlete of the 90s though. Especially in the USA. The NBA pushed him harder than any athlete ever.

Jordan was recognized as a global icon in the 90s man. I could tell you because I watched it happen, or I could give you endless articles and videos detailing just how much of a worldwide star MJ was but I'm thinking you don't want to hear it. Here are a couple quotes about just how famous Jordan was in the world.

“Michael Jordan was once one of 3 most famous people on the planet”: When a 1996 study found out MJ’s unmatched popularity, Princess Diana and the Pope being other top names

I Was Really Shocked by It..: Michael Jordan Couldn't Believe He Was More Famous than President Clinton and Princess Diana in 1997

Spoe is the longest tenured HC in US sports now but that needs to change very soon.

I don't think people remember how big Shaq was during Jordan's retirement in 1994. Like MJ he had his own licensing separate from the NBAPA.
Y'all remember the kids book that would be sold at book fairs in the 90s that had celebrity addresses in it? It had Shaq's "address" in it and I mailed him an NBA Hoops rookie card to autograph and send back to me. Instead it was returned in a vanilla envelope from some Bergstein and Steinberg law firm in Orlando basically warning me not to send anything again.

Gonna need to see that study

Cuz Hulkamania was obscene. MJ never got a cartoon, MJ didnt get 50 movies, MJ didnt sell out the Tokyo Dome, and MJ would have never gone over Antonio Inoki in North Korea brother. MJ never said that didnt work for him, he had the business on his side. Hulkster was a self made icon.

MJ did get on the Simpsons though when that was a big deal. And got like $20 million for a single concert for the Sultan of Brunei in 1996. Not sure if that trumps slamming Andre the Giant in front of over 93,000 people in the Pontiac Silverdome though.

Hulk Hogan turned heel and changed the business forever. Michael Jordan pussied out on his heel turn saying "Republicans buy shoes too."

Levels to the work, brother.
