It is a wise financial move and I think the odds are in his favor that he eventually gets that rubber match.

I think Nate understands that he's not championship material. He's never been in this sport to become a GOAT or go down in the history books. So there's really no motivation for him to take fights for the sake of legacy. He's had two big paydays in a row and he would like to make it three, then call it a career.

His upset finish of Conor, on short notice, will be, far and away, the thing Nate Diaz is remembered for in this sport. And if Conor actually comes back to the cage one day, and dominates guys like Khabib and Max and reclaims his belt, The Legend of Nate Diaz will be even more massively increased.

I think the implication is that Nate knows he won't be able to demand as much as he wants for the third McGregor fight if he gets whopped by GSP first.

I don’t even know if the UFC would match Nate and Conor ever again. I’d give the edge to Conor but right now, Conor has a huge money fight with GSP, a fight that if he loses (which I think he would) would not hurt his image.

A risky fight with Nate, Khabib, Lee or even Frankie, would destroy that.
