I saw this movie being played a lot on TV on my local channel

I think it's a British movie, set in WW2

The only scene I remember is at the end when I think it was the main character or one of the main characters taken from his cell then taken outside on a hill to be shot as some kind of sentence

I think he was shot to where he would fall into some kind of ditch

I keep thinking about this movie from time to time, and I need to find out the name of it

I don't know the answer, but oddly enough, the first thing that came to mind was the classic TV episode "Yellow" from the Tales of the Crypt (S03E14). I had to use the A.I. to track this down, for some reason I had it in my head it was a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode. I hadn't yet seen Paths of Glory the first time I watched it as a youth, but now I can never see it again without thinking about that movie. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, etc.)

Paramount is doing the remake to Shawshank Redemption staring Russian boxer Nicolai Valuev in the role that Tim Robbins had some 20 years earlier.

Director Michael Bay is taking over the director duties that were Frank Darabont's in the original 1994 release.

When Stephen King was asked about the casting change in using a guy like Valuev over Robbins he commented, "well, I guess they're both kind of tall".

The biggest change though will be the length of the movie.
The original movie script was 145 pages long. This one has been winnowed down to roughly 7 pages.

Why do you doubt it's that film? I just read the plot synopsis and it sounds like this is it.

Robert Duvall's character (a Nazi) faces a firing squad at the end. I can't remember him falling in a ditch. In a neutral way he could be considered a leading figure in the film but I don't think he is taken from a cell either.

Other than that it does indeed sound like the film and I highly recommend watching as it's a good film (from my childhood anyway).

Presently I can't post a pic of the character but it is Robert Duvall wearing an eye patch.
