this is 2 of my sons 3 fights last weekend. he won all 3 matches and got 4 first place medals that day. im really proud of the way he performed against these other kids who are from jiu jitsu clubs. as my son is in a karate club and the only experience he has in grappling is from me and him working on it here and there. we went to his karate tournament and found out they had jiujitsu so he joined in. let me know what u guys think. as of now all we have been working on is escaping guard/takedowns and sprawling. he also knows a few submissions and is pretty good at them. but for his age there were no submissions allowed and he was kinda bummed out about that.

ya he's only been doing karate for a few months now . he picked up on everything real fast. he's done 2 tournaments now and got 1st place for bo kata at both tournaments.

Your son has talent and moves well. Why not put him in an art where he can really compete that way (Judo, or BJJ) as opposed to doing useless katas with archaic weapons? Judo will be reasonably inexpensive, and he'll be able to compete in both grappling and in Judo tournaments with what he learns.

Sweet. I bet the kid has a lot of fun with the kata stuff. My nephews seem to be into that type of start...

what exact martial art is that?

shodokahn i think not sure bout the spelling.

and ya for him the weapons and stuff is alot of fun. right now id like to keep him interested and let him choose where he takes it.

we dont have much choice we live in northern canada there is no jiu jitsu schools or mma around here.

luckily where we train does boxing aswell and some of the guys grapple. i train there aswell and the guy who owns the club has given me alot of freedom to use the club for whatever i want. so a small group of us have been training mma . boxing/kickboxing for an hour then no gi grappling for an hour. but my son go's to the earlier classes and cant make it to most of the grappling classes because of school. we also have gotten a jiu jitsu instuctor in the last couple of months. a purple belt in bjj who has 8 mma fights. once summer comes and school is out he will be doing more.

purple belt is no slouch. if he is legit, he is most likely well qualified to teach.

good idea letting the kid enjoy himself. if they don't have fun they will quit.

You said he doesnt formally train but hes wearing a yellow belt? im jealous.. im a white belt .
j/k

Good stuff though , I wish I had of gotten into martial arts at that age.

ya he is legit. he won his 8 fights in mma. his next fight was vs tim catalfo but he was in a car accident days before and broke his back. catalfo fought in pride a few months later

he's a yellow belt in karate which he's been training in for the last 4/5 months

Congrats to your son!

I'd pay money to watch a kids tournament over most adult tournaments. It's so great to see them out there having fun. My son just turned 13, so he's moving into the teens division from now on, but we have a lot of great memories from his days in the kids division.

You've got to love the scrambles in transition with the little guys.
