Hey guys, just had my second boxing fight yesterday.
I was 1-0 and my opponent 0-0
We are both primarily mma fighters but have kickboxing experience

Also please ignore the silly commentary. This was the first time my friends watched me fight in years. They aren’t normally this corny, I think they were just excited lol.
I’m in the blue. I did end up getting two or three standing 10-8’s

I feel like my defense was lacking in some areas but I don’t know how to train it. Luckily he didn’t know how to sit on his shots or put power but I feel like a better boxer would have caught me in between me punching and going back to stance.

My coach’s also said on the outside I need more activity. More straight shots to the body etc

Defense tactics are pretty easy , while doing pads the pad holder should be throwing shots back at you now and then between your combos. This will give you muscle memory and reflexes. Most trainers don’t do this everything is pre planned and verbally executed , wear real head gear so he can throw hard shots back at you in real time so no injuries happen . I trained my son like this and he learned real fast to be reminded on defense with shots coming back at him .

Did your opponets punches feel heavy ?

You dominated. I'm not impressed by the guy in red.

As for defense, you know all the options ? All possible blocks and things you can do.
Counterstrike / intercept. Block / perry specifically by reading the punch. Block generally by double guard and moving the double guard like a shield. Foot work aka get out or to the side / inside ect. Dodge - move away/ slip out with upper body. Headmovement. Rolling with punches.

A lovely drill is having your partner throw real jabs at your chin and you gotta deflect them with a small movement. Parry them with your palm. Basically you stiffly hit them / redirect them on the side of their fist. You can do this for hooks too by putting your elbow between their biceps. But that is a riskier read and often you'll just move away and shield with your arm the side of your head.

Generally defense is a combination of all these things. You can do 2-3 at the same time.

Good job man. Your opponent wasn't on your level. Those panicked arm punches he threw inside would've been good opportunity for you to catch and shoot. You definitely could've mixed some body shots more.

As for defense you didn't really have post punch defense and there were times you just braced for impact rather than looking defend/counter when you saw your opponent stepping in. If you see him step in, be ready to step back, use head movement/counter. You only use your jab as an offensive tool but you can stick it out there to disrupt the path of his punches.

Thanks. Nah I didn’t really feel anything as far as punches go. He was tough and never stopped trying to win though. Came out with a different approach every round

Nice, thanks for the solid feedback. I think he was throwing those arm punches really quick and using a lot of energy, so I don’t know if I had the ability to catch and shoot. I probably could have rolled under them and came back with a left hook though.
You’re also right in that I need to learn to set up more body shots. My left hook to the body never seems to land clean, and my right hook takes too long to wrap around the guard to get to the body

It’s weird because I actually do like to interrupt combos with my own straight-jab combos. I need to start using that more.
But yeah I do mostly use the jab as an offensive range tool.

I think getting low and then firing a combo would work well for me. Catch and shoot is kind of harder for me imo. Just like tank had a hard time this weekend because he never does that either

There were times when you threw a 1 2 I thought you could've thrown the 2 to the body. The point isn't it necessarily hurt or even score, but to give him different looks so he doesn't know where you'll throw. There were times you just let him march towards you that could've been a good opportunity to land a hard jab to the body to stop his momentum.

In this case just letting him windmill those punches was fine because I don't know many of those shots would even score and you weren't in danger anyway but of course the next guy could be better. Doing some catch and shoot drills with a partner could be a good idea. I used the cue of throwing a punch from which ever arm I felt my opponent hit. You feel a punch hit your left arm, fire a left hook.

I gotta say that rear uppercut you landed was beautiful.
