The kid was all about the huge opportunity this was for him. He didn’t blast doubters online, he basically agreed with everyone pointing out how tough a challenge this was, just repeating how motivated he was.

What I was hoping for him was getting stopped late after a gritty performance that would make him a decent European contender for a while.

Munguia was never a defensive wizard and I’ve always thought someone would get to break this open mouth of his. I just didn’t believe it would be this kid from the small town where my wife’s grandparents had their home.

Nice. I'm happy for him. He'll get a big payday if they rematch which I'm sure will happen.
 
As for Munguia I'd wait a while before running it back. At least 8 months. You don't want to get knocked out like that and come back too early. Too many fighters have rushed back into fights after getting KO'd only for it to happen again.
 
I recorded this and just finished it right now. So glad I didn’t spoil it. The shock was real. Holy shit. Happy for Surace.

Cannot wait to see what Oscar has to say about this.

Whatever happens from now on his career is a success. From a boxing standpoint he comes from the Third World, and this is no overstatement.

That and he won’t be able to rely on his chin as heavily as he’s done in the past. These days are over. Dudes will plant their feet and look for that dented jaw.

Agreed. Munguia will need to be more defensively responsible going forward. Even against guys that are considered feather-fisted like Surace was.

There was only 3 of us in here actually watching it live.
He almost KOd Surace through the ropes in the 2nd. And dominated him the whole fight until he got caught.
If I was Surace, I would try to get a Canelo fight by running my mouth.
What happens if he fights Jaime again and gets smoked? It wasn't like Surace was showing us anything in there prior to the shot.
Everyone will chalk up the first fight as a fluke and that'll be it.
He should not fight Munguia right away and try to fight someone they can get past and parlay this into something.

I'm interested in it. Hell, I'd even buy it. A fresh rivalry like Mexico vs France would be welcomed by me. I'm not sure this one's ever been done before in boxing.

This is like NBA vs G-League :)

On paper that’s interesting, though. All 3 French dudes are undefeated, Surace pulled the upset of the year and Cinco de Mayo provides some historical background.

As for the matchups all 3 Mexicans have the tools to sweep this rather easily, Canelo as Mbilli is a sucker for uppercuts, Pacheco as Sadjo is kind of limited as a pressure fighter - no plan B - and Munguia if he doesn’t get clipped.

Mbilli and Sadjo can certainly entertain - even if sticking and moving against Sadjo can make it a stinker IMO - and Munguia Surace II sells itself in Mexico.

It isn’t that silly to make it happen, as weird as it sounds.

Canelos only getting older. Pacheco could still be "green" enough to lose. And Munguia just did lose.
I think it could be more interesting and competitive than people would like to believe.

Yeah. It's intriguing and as far as I'm aware we've never seen a national rivalry in pro boxing between Mexico & France. I even checked the historical results of duals in amateur boxing and it hasn't happened there. We've never seen this rivalry before in the sport.

Hopefully! What I’m just saying is that tonight’s shocker should be considered as it is : boxing’s unpredictability at its peak.

As far as I’m concerned all 3 guys giving a good account of themselves would be good enough. I don’t forget what my domestic boxing scene looks like, and it’s not a pretty sight.

Somehow if a bunch of French kids get (kind of) hyped up by this instead of Paul vs Tyson or UFC 753 it’s already a big W in my book. Surace comes from a French boxing stronghold down south - as weak as it is - and he’s the kind of character that parents could like. Maybe he’ll get a few youngsters to try a few boxing lessons.
