Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Can anybody help me choose between patong boxing gym and patong stadium gym? I felt chalong was too far away for me last time, i prefer busy city life than out in the sticks kind of feel.

PSG is in the middle of Patong, and PBG is close to the city but right outside and you need a motorbike to get around there.

There are reviews of both in this thread if you search around but they have good reviews. Maximum is in Patong too.

hey guys just finalizing my trip to sitsongpeenong in phuket for a few weeks beginning at the end of December. The gym accommodation looks pretty fairly priced, but wondering if anyone else has trained there or close by and gotten cheaper accomadation?

Any other tips or info regarding the gym would be much appreciated. This is my first muay thai camp and first trip on my own

That gym is very new and none of us have trained there yet so you are on your own. It's in the Kamala beach area which is touristy. If you want use agoda.com to get a hotel.

thanks im thinking of winging it at this point. Changed my plans and might skip phuket, it seems like it will be a lot busier plus its more expensive.

Im planning on chiang mai for 2 weeeks to check out santai, team quest, KC or chai yai.

Then 2 weeks in bangkok for a bit of nightlife and culture. Can you guys recommend any gyms close to the city that may not be as busy during high season and thats appropriate for beginners?

i wouldnt mind checking out some smaller gyms as long as they are beginner/foreign friendly

Phuket is an ideal starting point as you will be hanging around lots of other foreigners doing muay thai, but you are right, it is very expensive, especially in high season. Bangkok I would recommend fighting spirit gym and elite boxing for you.

I'd recommend that you also check out Thai Boxing Center as well. The gym is right in the Night Bazaar area. https://www.facebook.com/SitThaharnaekMuaythai
The camp owner and his staff are very honest, and simply love muaythai. Make your inquiry thru the FB.

How did you find patong stadium gym? Im heading there in february, not a lot of reviews about though.

Funny you should ask, I had trouble finding it when I got here - The Tuk-Tuk drivers couldn't find it! It seems they call it Sainamyen stadium. Turns out it's like 6 mins walk from my hotel.

Again, I'm not very experienced with MT gyms, the sessions I have been going to have had 5 - 7 people with 4 trainers kicking about. Yesterday I did 4 pad rounds and 2 technique rounds one on one, so I guess the attention is pretty good.

Haven't done much in the way of sparring though...

Will be training at elite boxing can't wait. Can anyone give me the run downs of there sessions? I've already read them up on muaythaicamps but I am not sure how updated that is.

hey i was wondering if camps in Thailand, other than the 2 daily sessions have open gym hours for just doing bagwork and stuff.

oh wow this is insane, they got packages for kickboxing in amsterdam (outskirts) or boxing in mexico city, like at the same place that marquez trains.
http://www.fightcamptravel.com/en/holiday/boxing-in-mexico/

All camps should not have a problem with this if you already pay for a session, check with them first though.

That website is for people too lazy to make the arrangements themselves or want something in the long term and don't speak the language. I would at least go to the camps website first and see if they have arrangements for foreigners. Personally I wouldn't waste my money there.

nice, one thing i've observed is that gyms here the heavy bags are filled pretty dense, but from youtube footage camps in Thailand usually have bags that are filled less densely and appear to be even a bit saggy on the top. Probably cus Thai fighters like to use smaller gloves for bag work. i would never use those twins bag mitts, i would break my wrists lol.

The bags are filled in all shapes and sizes, just pick the one you want.

Anyone who's been to Thailand to train MT for over a month please shoot me a PM.

I'm planning on going later this year for 3 months and could use a little back-and-forth in a more conversational basis.

Thanks in advance.

Hey all,

So i did a month in Phuket last year and am going back to TL in a few weeks. I will be going to Chiang Mai first, so can anyone suggest a good gym for a novice? I am also looking to do strength training so ideally somewhere that is near the main town...

Also, can anyone clue me in to cost of living in CM compared to Phuket? I know it's meant to be cheaper but how much for a beer/massage etc.?

Cheers

I recently became a CELTA certified ESL instructor and interested in training muay thai boxing while teaching in Thailand. Is anyone here teaching ESL to pay for training? Are there any school/camps that would trade for services?

I don't know if you are teaching in a classroom, but I heard it's not a good idea as the muay thai classes are during school times. Unless you go to Bangkok, there will probably be some later hours classes there.

Santai, KC and Hongthong probabily have the best reputations(i'm not saying they are). Tell them you are new and they will start u off slow. IMO it's the price of accomodation that is the cheapest thing about CM. Things get significantly cheaper if u stay a month or longer. Phuket tuk tuks pricing kills it for me as i'm too chicken shit to ridea motorbike there.

Thai massage costs 250b in phuket, 200b in BKK, not sure about CM. I always pay 300b including tips regardless. Unless it's really bad. Food is slighly cheaper.

food is cheaper, depends obviously whereu eat.

TBH i wouldn't let costs dictate choice of location. It's way down on my list of priorities when selecting a gym.

EDIT: CM massage costs 150b

Haha I bottled hiring one too, which turned out to be the right decision as on my last night I crashed a girls scooter after driving it for literally less than 5 meters!

Cheers for the info mate. I'm hoping to be a bit more dedicated to training this time - I get the impression that they don't really bother with you unless you are committed, which is fair enough.

Santai looks a bit out of the way. Have you heard of Chay-yai? they look okay...

I agree on the money thing - but I am just hoping I don't spend as much as I did last time!!

Yeah I've seen a video of training at Chay yai. Was impressed although it was shot 4/5 years back or so. I haven't heard much about it recently. Worth a shot, try it for a few days, let us know how you get on.

If you want to know about chai yai, ask frode, he trained there a year ago and said it was good for experienced people.
