Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Anyone know of a way to check if a camp in Thailand is recognized by the WMC? I tried sending the WMC an email asking, but there is always an error on the website.

thanks.

Why would a camp need to be recognized by the WMC?

Doesn't need to be, it just would be nice to have a regulated standard muay thai style being taught. I know it might be B.S because it's so corrupt there anyways.....There are so many different styles like there are dialects.

Any ideas?

I've never heard of this and I wouldn't worry about it.

Instead of seeking WMC recognition as the barometer of a camp's quality, why not instead look at the number of champions and top contenders it has on its current/recent roster?

Thank you for your answer. Would sitsongpeenong be a camp of this quality or do you have a better one that you know of?

I have just gotten news that Team Quest is actually trying to improve after hearing from everyone that they went downhill (especially when I call them the 2nd worst MT camp in Thailand). New reviews have brought them from 2nd worst MT camp to mediocre, so if you want to do MMA or medicore Muay Thai in Chiang Mai, that is your chance.

What do you consider to be the #1 worst gym in Thailand?
I lived in Chiang Mai for quite a while, best gyms there are Santai and KC from my experience. Hongthong (new gym) would be worth checking out too but I haven't been up there since it opened.

Tiger and Phuket Top Team are the spots for MMA and BJJ. By far the most experienced trainers. I read that Mike Swick will be having a soft opening of AKA at the start of 2014. I would assume he'll have good trainers there. Still waiting to hear who they'll be.

Siangboxing is the worst (search the forum's posts) followed by TQ then tiger. Tq had a reputation of not correcting anyone's mistakes, 3 pad rounds , and taking your full fight purse. Now they correct you and take 80% of your purse the 1st two fights. Still shit but not as shitty. Tiger just wants your money and trainers don't care if you take a private with them. PTT is coming in 4th since they also employ shady tactics but at least you learn more unlike tiger.

It's all about customer service and getting what you pay for.

Sor.Vorapin on Khao San Rd is the worst I have been to in my 11 trips to Thailand :)

I have a hard time believing that as the Hongthong brothers used to be there.
I've been to their gym recently and they are very technical IMO (plus some of the nicest/friendly people I've met in Thailand).

Fightpassport wrote a pretty damning review of the TQ but has since taken it down.

Some people really love tiger. Although i would personally avoid such places, I wouldn't rule it out for everyone. It all depends what you're looking for in a gym. Just look at all the mixed reviews.

Sitsongpeenong would be a great place to start! Kem's there, and so's Tongchai, plus it's a foreigner-friendly gym. Although I've heard recently that the foreign trainees are separated from the Thai fighters now, I've also heard that the training is still good. Anyone else care to chime in? :)

Other gyms to consider are foreigner-friendly gyms with high-level nak muay like Kiatphontip (contact anorak here on Sherdog for more info), Jockey, Sasiprapa, Eminent Air, Sitmonchai, FA Group and Petyindee Academy (although it's less of a "traditional" MT camp per se, it's still home to Sarm-A, Nong-O, and Petmorakot as well as their renowned trainer Taweewat).

Like anything, shop around a bit and see what seems to suit you best!

Hey guys, i will be staying in Bangkok for a while, just wondering which trainers were currently at Elite fight club at the moment? There website hasn't been updated in a while. How is the quality of training they provide there and as much info i can get on them please? Thanks!

I think they are pretty quick returning emails. I asked about prices a few months ago and got a fast reply.

If anyone can please answer -

Which is better? Not just in training but location as well. Santai (Chiang Mai) or Sinbi in (Phuket)?

Phuket is kind of fast paced, and more expensive than ChiangMai. If you like sun&sea, you'll like Phuket. ChiangMai is more like a quiet country particularly at SanKampaeng. Lots of hills, and it should be much cooler than Phuket right now. Within the municipality of ChiangMai, You can find all the entertainment you'll need. I myself prefer ChiangMai. BTW, I'd recommend that you look over https://www.facebook.com/SitThaharnaekMuaythai on your arrival, and try a session there. It's right in down town. Then you can compare it to Santai. I'm certain that Sit Thaharnaek Muaythai will meet your requirement for muaythai training. If you comment on it's face book, ask for khun Pau, and tell her that RugMuaythai sent you lol.

Also Sinbi is a much bigger gym with a lot more trainers and students compared to Santai. From what I understand, Santai is a much smaller camp compared to Sinbi but both have good training. I've heard nothing but great reviews from both. It's also further from the center of Chiang Mai so expect it to be pretty quiet and less distractions.
