Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

This is My idea so far... go check out Keatkhamtorn for a few days then head out to a camp outside Bangkok. I really wanna be as far from the metropolis as possible. its all between Legacy (i like that i can grapple there) and the prices are great. Tru Bee cause by Pictures it looks as rural as i can get. Lanna because i was told its a great gym. and last Sinbi in Phuket. I know Phuket must be infested with tourist but i hear its a great competition team and i LOVE the beach... lets all get together in Bangkok?

As far as training goes, Keatkhamtorn has all of those gyms beat with ease. I can say that just by the amount of champions they've made. If you want rural, check these places out: report loukthamsua gym

From the report on this gym, no foreigner has ever trained here :D Have at it
report soosompong gym

bahahah one of the articles says the fighters are "starved" i dunno my man. have you heard anything about "Koh Tao Island Muay Thai" its on an island. looks BEAUTIFUL!

I've never heard anything "Koh Tao Island Muay Thai" but it does look very touristy from the web site. Whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll be happy with. If not, just find another gym. Only pay for a few days though when you first arrive so you are't stuck there for 2 weeks or a month unless you are absolutely sure that is where you want to be.

What are the times to go to thailand and train when there will be the least amount of falang? Cause I really do like kawsamrit's emphasis on their hands and want to go when there will be minimal foreigners.

i think april will be a good time right guys? its the hottest month of the year ive read.

k so ive chosen that i will first train at either lanna or lagacy for the first 2-3 weeks then head out to sinbi and enjoy some beach for the last 2-3 weeks of my trip. If anyone can help me choose between Lanna In Chiang Mai or Legacy in Ubon PLEASE HELP!!!!

Probably around April to early November. Lots of Farangs start to show up by late November as some take interest in the Kings Cup and plus the high season.

When I got to kaewsamrit there were a lot of people training around the last two weeks of November to first couple of weeks of December.

If you go during the summer time for the northern hemisphere(june, july, august) I'm sure you are going to find more falangs there. Also during the high season as mentioned. February, march, april, sept, oct, and early nov. shouldn't be too busy.

PS. If you really want to loose some weight, come in april. I'm looking forward to the heat and humidity.

I just want to remind all who are posting in this thread to give Cali some credit starting this thread.

One of the best threads on Sherdog.

Though I am to old to feel the adventure many of you are having going to Thailand for the first time, it's interesting for me to see in what direction the gyms are going in Thailand. I know the gyms in Samui and Phangan now days are feasting on first timers, sucking money rather than giving quality training.

Back in 2000 I paid 150 bath per session(2 times a day, with 1 hour private training with the head trainer.)

Btw. The gym on the road near Buddy in Lamai is now closed.

Yea big upt to Cali for hookin it up with the info. I will be seeing you in Bangkok. We probably wont miss eachother. Theres gonna be 3 guys from cali at Keatkhamtorn.

Thanks guys and to everyone that contributes to make this thread what it is.

Saengmorakot(Nakorntorn's) and Chuwattana are also known for having good hands.

I am planning a stay for about six months in Thailand and would like to train in different gyms ( Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Paghnan).
Right now I am in doubt about where I should start my training, because what I have read is that the training in Bangkok gyms is harder/serious then i.e. islands gyms (I would like to start my training in Bangkok). I wish to train hard/serious but I am in doubt that my current physical condition can deal/meet the expectations from the Bangkok gym/trainers. I am fit and good shape, but not at all in 6 hours daily MuayThai- physical condition.
Should I choose the Bangkok gym or go with an island gym to get in the 6 hour training mode before heading Bangkok?

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

*I am aware of that the training in any gym in Thailand will be challenging, so I have the respect to all gyms/trainers.

I doubt anyone is in top condition when they come to Thailand. You have to acclimate to the climate first and the trainers know that at every gym. Your skills and stamina will be accessed at day 1 and your training will be tailored for you. They will push your cardio almost daily but that is what they are their for. Your condition will change greatly after just a few weeks. Whatever conditioning you do at home will help you in your training there. Make sure you run almost everyday. I'm running 8km/5miles now almost daily. It took me about 2.5 weeks to build up to that when I was not running at all. One thing you will see though is that most people training on the islands do not run before they train unless they are training for a fight. :)

Hey Cali, thanks for all the great info.

I have a question as I am looking to go to Thailand sometimes. How good were you guys when you went? I trained in an MMA gym last summer and hasn't done anything except BJJ since then and I think my stand up skills is minimal if not none. Should that factor into where I train?
