Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

was wondering if there was any new information on Sitsongpeenong? i'm graduating in may and am looking to plan a two-month trip at a no-bs camp that gives me no choice but to learn. questions:

how welcoming is the camp to beginners? i have trained primarily BJJ and have limited muay thai experience. should i look elsewhere?

how much money per month, in all and including extra, did you spend? what sort of spending habits did you keep and how much did you go out and do?

how much culture can you soak up on your stay? should i look into paying for an extra week or two to see sights if i want my training to be a priority?

Are you sure that you are ready to jump into the deep end of the pool without knowing how to swim properly? From what I've read, they do some really intense training there and your cardio from BJJ may not be enough. Have you looked at the cost of training at Sitsongpeenong? They are probably the highest in the country as of April 14th.

Spending habits will vary person to person. If you are concentrating on training. I doubt you will be doing much of anything on the week nights so you should save a lot of cash there. I would advise staying a week or two long after you have completed your training so you can experience what Thailand has to offer other than training. There is so much to see and do that you don't do it, you may feel a bit empty after training.

That's also what I'm unsure of. What are the good camps in Thailand for someone who really wants to use the two months as a sort of boot camp to hone my striking skills. I don't ever intend to use pure MT once leaving the country - my stateside goals are in MMA. so are there any good beginner gyms that aren't also touristy? i just want to avoid spending my money on a glorified weight loss program. And i don't like all the things i've read about TMT and the other big package gyms...

(lol big package)

I'm only gonna train in Thailand if I can guarantee that my trainer is an old man, a Muay Thai master. It has to be one on one training, where I'm kicking palm trees, and having coconuts dropped on my abs from the treetops. There also has to be some sort of ancient burial ground involved. Basically the movie "Kickboxer" with JCVD.

MTI?

Alright, i'm researching.

i just wanna say thanks to you in particular and everyone else for making such a helpful thread, too. you guys are bitchin'.

it looks like they are very cheap as far as training and accommodations go but it doesn't look like they give meals. if i had to buy meals/basic living expenses, how much extra money should i expect to bring for a week/month?

EDIT: Sorry about all the questions, but i'm a little confused about the certificate/non-certificate training on here. what is the benefit of getting a certificate and is one better than the other?

It's been mentioned before but if you focus solely on training (that's what I would do), you can get away with $500-700 USD (monthly). If you want go drink/go sightseeing and do other touristy stuff, plan on bringing more. also, if you need to buy gear, bring more.

If you eat local Thai food you will save a ton of cash. Western food will always be more expensive.

im buying my plane ticket in just a few hours. leaving march 31. i can use all the support i can get, im yet to choose a camp...

Have you trained before and how long are you going for? What area of Thailand do you want to be in? Kinda last minute don't you think... Shit happens. Ask all the questions you can and read through the thread.

yes i have been training kickboxing for almost 6 years this june. i have always wanted to go and i just sold my truck so i can get out of dodge and finally do this. One of my trainers friend recommended to me today via email that Lanna Muay Thai in Chiang Mai. possibly Sinbi Muay Thai in Phuket. Ive seen Tru-bee and Legacy which both seem pretty cool. I really would like a place with amazing training, good people and somewhere beautiful.

Most of Thailand is beautiful so don't worry about that. Since you have 6 years of kickboxing experience, I would not recommend Lanna or True Bee. Are you looking to have a fight or two while in country or are you just looking to train and see the sites? Sinbi has some great trainers as does Legacy but legacy is also MMA based now so I don't know if you want to be around that element. If you want to be around top fighters and gyms, I can name a whole bunch of gyms for you. As for me, I'll be at Keatkhamtorn. Keatkhamtorn MuayThai Gym, Bangkok Thailand - Home

Well i have been focusing on my submission wrestling and mma more in the last 2 yrs. i will admit this trip is going to be a big refresher on my Muay Thai game. for the last 2 yrs Ive been training my stand up at a CM(Crazy Monkey Defense Program)boxing school. Ans let me tell you this has been my best stand up game ever but its time to get back to basics. I would love to get a fight in while there. I just purchased my ticket for March 31- May 3. I really am looking for somewhere on a budget. i don't need anything fancy. A fan a mattress and some food and im good. how long will you be at Keatkhamtorn? And do you know the monthly rate. Doesnt say on there site..

That monthly rate is 25000 baht which includes, pickup from the airport, accommodation, training and food for the month. They area professional gym with nearly all there mature fighters fighting at the top level. I'll be there my entire time for training and have a fight for them. I arrive April 1st and depart on May 5th. If you are interested in training there, email this guy: [email protected] No payment is due till you get to the gym obviously. What time do you arrive? My flights lands at 4pm on the 1st Bangkok time.

im buying my plane ticket in just a few hours. leaving march 31. i can use all the support i can get, im yet to choose a camp...

Im also leaving from LA March 31st for my first time also.. :icon_chee

i leave lax on march 31 and arrive 2 days later at 1 am bangkok time. i cant figure out how this all plays out. which scares the crap out of me cause i have no idea what im gonna do at 1 am in bangkok. so as of now im debating between staying in bangkok and training at Keatkhamtorn or going to Sinbi and catching some sun at the beach.... o man!!!! decisions decisions.

Im guessing you're leaving the afternoon of the 31st?

Im flying direct to BKK and arrive 6am April 2nd.

I am certainly not looking forward to the flight..
