Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

So I'm currently planning my 2 week trip with my wife. She's will be on vacation and I just want to train, lol... So I got a few questions:

1. I read in one of the gym reviews "don't pay up front in Thailand". Can somebody elaborate? You mean don't pay for a week/month training? Just pay the 1 day training? Also does this apply on accommodations as well?

2. I don't plan to rent a scooter. What are the other alternatives? Can I rent a bicycle? Or are places pretty near each other that you can just walk around? (I'm thinking Chiang Mai)

3. Back to accommodations: is it adviceable to pre-book online? Or do you guys just look for a room/hotel once you get there? And is staying in the gym cheaper, more expensive, or about the same price as staying outside the gym?

Thanks in advance!

1. If you are going to an established gym with a western contact or even owners, there's no problem in paying 2 weeks training/accomm up front. I think the warning is more towards people going long term, for example if you're planning a 6 month trip then don't pay it all up front as you could get injured or whatever in the first two weeks.... Personally I paid a month at a time at the gyms I've been to and had no problems.

2. Bicycle hire should be no problem.

3. For a two week holiday I'd just pre-book online, you don't want to spend a chunk of your holiday looking for a room. You can probably find something cheaper if you wait until you are there, but again not really worth it unless you are there long term.

Appreciate the info sir.

This is slightly off topic but it is a muay thai training question.

If anyone has done brazilian jiu jitsu before you know that the elbow escape (hip escape, shrimping and probably other names) is the first thing you're taught and drill because you use it constantly in grappling and is very important.

Is there a fundamental and crucially important movement(or movements) for muay thai that you can rep by yourself that you can't do enough because it will serve you for the rest of your days (like the elbow escape).

If there is what might that be. Thanks.

Wrong thread, make a new one and post it in standup. This is for people wanting information on Muay Thai gyms in Thailand.

My bad I found an appropriate thread. I was on my mobile and didn't see anything more specific last night.

Stance and footwork. Shadowboxing. Skip knees (you can shadow it by a wall if you don't a bag to hit). Those are probably the equivalent of shrimping and breakfalling.

Going back out to Bangkok in february, was at Chitlada nov/dec time, had a good time but looking to go back to Jitti gym this time

But was wondering if anyone knows if Rajasak is still there?

Thanks

I'm planning a month-long trip to train MMA in Thailand. Can I get past experiences and comparisons on these 4 gyms?

You picked 4 of the worst gyms in Thailand right there LOL.

Can't speak about Legacy or AKA, but PTT is better than Tiger for Muay Thai but around the same for the MMA.

Heading there in couple months for training. However, when in BKK I will just be sightseeing because i'll only be there for 2.5 days. The only priority is seeing the fights at either big stadium while i'm there.

My schedule may change so i'll be able to check out a gym in BKK, but either way are there any suggestions on where to stay in the city? BKK is so big that i'm not sure what neighborhoods are nice or what areas are advantageous to be in for sightseeing.

Stay at any hotel you can afford near a BTS line or the MRT subway. That will allow you to get around easily and put you within reach of many sights and some gyms if you decide to train.

You'll have to get a cab to the stadiums though. Raja is much closer in to central BKK than the new lumphini.

I stay at the Sukhumvit Suites.
It is right at the junction of the BTS skytrain and the MRT subway in Asoke.

Thanks both of you.

Will the BTS and MRT get me to the same areas of town?

best area to have fun are koh san road and sambruti. also close to the palace and other sightseeing.

hotels are all good..for 50 euro s a night you have 5 star hotels...swimming pool and everything. I like budget... the one i always go is New siam 2 http://www.newsiam.net/ns/newsiam2.php
800 baht voor 2 person room..aircvo etc. great food and close to the busy streets.

For fight you have radchadamnoen and lumpini..but they ask farang prices.. so you pay 50 dollar a ticket.

There are other stadiums as Channel something and other places that are cheaper..but there are only fight once 1 2 weeks in the weekend and so on.

i will end my training there in april same time as the Songkran festival...anybody knows where the good fights are around that time?

Yes and no. The 2 BTS lines and the MRT all provide access to different areas, but there are numerous stations where they overlap and you can transfer between them, making a pretty large area that is accessible via public transit.

I stayed at the Park Plaza Soi 18 on my last trip (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...eviews-Park_Plaza_Bangkok_Soi_18-Bangkok.html), and it was walking distance to both the BTS and MRT. It was around $60 a night, which is a deal considering a hotel that nice would cost 2-3 times that in the states.

That was my 'vacation' hotel on that trip, so I only stayed there for a few nights after arriving and before leaving. I got another hotel for about $20/night closer to 96 Penang when I trained there for a week. Needless to say, that hotel was not as nice, but still decent and I could walk to the gym.

Ultimately, I would just figure out how much you want to spend on a hotel, and find one with good reviews that looks nice. Being close to the BTS & MRT is nice for getting around cheaply and avoiding traffic, but taxis aren't all that expensive either in BKK (you just have to fight with them to use the meter).

Excellent. Thank you.

Am going to 96 Penang gym in 2 weeks, just wanted peoples opinion of the training and the gym, and also any advice which would come in handy.

Thank you

Good training, but laidback. If you dont want to live far from gym, blooms and rompo mansion are pretty good.
