Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Ryukyu, Can you give me an update on Sinbi ?
Are the training sessions just like couple of years ago, is the camp still suitable for fighters or more towards beginners ?
Does Wang still training farangs or just the Thai kids and Saenchai ?
Are Pot, Det, Pad, X and Ann still there ?

I trained there in April. All those trainers are still there (except maybe Pad), but it's hard to get a private with Pot thanks to all the videos Ryukyu has posted on Youtube with Pot. I did 90% of my pad work and a few privates with Wang when I was there.

I trained there October and November (up until just over a week ago). It was busy, and a lot of people who were there were semi touristy, and there was a good amount of beginners. A few times I didn't even get rounds on pads because there was too many people. Not ideal, but the trainers there still make it a decent gym.

Pot, Det, X and Ann are still there, Pad must have moved on. Wang trains falangs during morning/afternoon training and you can get privates with him as well.

Yeah Ped has left and Oron is gone also.

Wang is still training people in the normal classes, Dee is helping him train all the young fighters. They have 3 or 4 new trainers, so everyone get 5 rounds on pads.

Honestly the training has always been the same for me. Same as it was 5 years ago. As far as the skill level of Farang, it just depends on who happens to be there. Last summer there were 5 or 6 pro fighters from Oz training at the gym. So there were very good people to spar and clinch with.

Sounds good, im traveling there with a good friend who is 20 and already has 30 fights, we were in Sinbi before and it was nice and quiet.
Im really hoping for the same atmosphere when I go there in March for 2 months, im gonna be heading to Chuwattana gym for 3-4 weeks after Sinbi.
Cant wait to fight in the big stadiums in BKK !

Det and Ann both fought for Chuwattana. They should be able to set you up there no problem.

I am at Sinbi atm, and although I havent been to Chai Yai gym (yet) I have had a lot of 1 on 1 training from two of their trainers after they moved overseas. I'm sure someone has been to both, but from what I have experienced on average the training itself is of a very similar (extremely high, as you would expect from these guys) level, but the English of the Chai Yai guys was significantly better and they are very fun, cheeky guys. Making the actual communication easier and more enjoyable. Although they had just moved to an English speaking only country when I met them so you can draw your own conclusions I guess.

Sinbi is obviously a top notch gym, and although I cannot speak for Chai Yai gym itself I would be very surprised if a bad gym could create the two trainers I know, so I would expect to be of very high quality.

i trained at Chay Yai for about 7 months. The trainers that were there last year when I was training were mostly very good. Go, Rashine, Yak, Chelsae (when he could be bothered) and Mr A are all great trainers and they have a lot to offer, will spend the time with you and are all good fun to work with. I never trained with Wimbledon when he was over but I have heard he is also a good trainer. The rest of the trainers there I wouldn't rate. the are basically there just to fill the numbers and should really be used to work with the people there who are more into getting fit and not into progressing theitr MT abilities although this is not the case. The trainers have now all changed with the exceptions of the trainers associated with the stadium who only do the afternoons. Go, Rashine and Yak have all been sacked, Mr A is running a good gym now in Pai. And Chealsea is over in NZ with Wimbledon working as a trainer there. I have heard reports from people training there that the quality of training has gone downhill due to the changes.

Also I would add for anyone who is going to train there, you should be very weary of the main owner, Noom. He may come across as being very nice and friendly but this is not the case. Be careful he is not trying to scam you in any way and I've heard a terrible story about him stalking one of the guys at the gyms thai girlfriend on his motorbike after leaving a nightclub to the point where she was in tears. One particular scam he tried to pull on me was as follows: He came to my room one morning and said he needed to ask me something. I sasid sure no problem and he said 'can you lend me 10'000 baht'? Naturally I asked him what for and he told me that one of the students was leaving the gym that day and he was due him the money which he didn't have as his girlfriend was out of town with his bank card. I didn't give him the money as it sounded a bit dodgy to me and I hadn't known him very long at the time. I found out later from a couple of other people training at the gym that he had tried the same scam on them on separate occasions. So be weary of that and I would say don't lend him any money as I've heard from others that they have had a lot of hassle getting the money back. I was actually asking him regularly for 4000 baht he was due to a girl training there who he had not paid back before she went home. She had asked me to get the money and send it back to her but Noom would just say 'I'll give it to you tomorrow' every time I saw him. I gave up after a few weeks and she ended up having to get it from a friend who went to train there by him paying Noom the money short for training.

A new gym that hasn't been mentioned yet is Team Quest in Chiang Mai (opened about a month ago).

I did a write up on here: Muay Thai Training in Thailand | Fight Passport

Here are some photos..

There are a few videos posted on the Fight Passport entry linked above.

The gym is new and only a handful of people have trained here so far. The trainers are all awesome and they give a lot of personal attention. Obviously there's a grappling program as well (which is run separately from the Muay Thai).

For anyone who's familiar with Chiang Mai, the gym is within walking distance from the Central Airport Plaza shopping mall.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I've heard Patong Boxing Gym is supposed to be good? Anyone knows anything about that gym? Also if there are any cheap bungalows or other nearby the camp, don't really wanna live at the camp.

Thanks

Im planning on training MT at NoVa MMA in northern Virginia, anyone have any experience with this school? Do you recommend it or is there a better one nearby?

Once you get to thailand what do you guys do for phone service? Back when I was single I'd just rely on internet and forgo phone but now that I have family back home, I want them to be able to reach me at all time. Has anyone used T-mobile phones? Just swap out the sim card?

I bought a cheap phone at MBK, kept it loaded up with SIM cards from the 7-11, and then sold the phone back to the same vendor on my way out of the country.

Just read about renting condos in Thailand but they appear to be priced at a monthly rate. Anyone know if you can rent condos by the week in Bangkok, preferably near Sitsongpeenong camp?

Hey what do you guys think of EVOLVE in Singapore?

I just came back from training at PGB for 2.5 months. I wrote a review a while back which you can search for it you like.

I've only trained at 2 gyms in Thailand and so, like most people, I can't compare other places from personal experience. That being said, I had a great experience at PGB and I plan to go back for a longer stay at the end of the year.

The big selling point for me is that all lessons are private lessons. That is, you are assigned a trainer and he works with you one on one. You can, of course, switch trainers if you prefer to work with somebody else. I really liked it because I got a ton of personal attention which really helped both my technique and confidence.

Facilities are fine. 2 rings which are in good shape. The bags and weight equipment could all use an upgrade but are more then adequate for training. You get a nice view of the water while you train.

The local area is really hilly so runs are hard but short. I preferred to run on the beach which was awesome.

You mentioned that you didn't want to stay at the gym but - FYI - they have some bungalows right by the gym which you get a good deal on if you book by the month (30,000 Baht all in which implies 20,000 Baht per month for the accommodation). I stayed there for a couple of days and personally it wasn't for me. However, the price is good, they are fairly new and you get all the basics (Wi-fi, tv, decent bed, A/C).

I stayed on the On the Hill Resort which was 500m from camp. Great family run place but price is at least 1,200 Baht in high season, which may or may not fit your budget. There are 3 other hotels within short walking distance but all are more expensive. Karon and Patong both have cheap places but you will have a short scooter ride to get to the gym (5-10 minutes). I don't have any specific suggestions but if you contact the gym, Anita (expat Australian) the manager will be able to give you some advice.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Good luck wherever you end up training. For me, PBG was a great choice and I am really happy with my time there.
