Mtg nerds get in here!

if you want to get back I suggest you go to your local store.

Magic has two big formats now

Standard which is 4 of the most current sets.

Modern which is all the sets with new frames

Niche ones are legacy which is basically your collection with certain restrictions

Vintage is the old school

Legacy and Vintage are dying formats as very few people play and can afford to spend thousands of dollars on a few pcs of cards.

You can also try Arena which is the new type of online magic.

I suggest you try checking starcitygames and mtgsalvation for discussions on Magic. I also use Starcitygames as a basis for prices.

Doubt cards coming out now will be worth much in the future. Look all the way back to 4th edition and ice age and shit from 1996 forward. None of these are worth much.
old cards that have now demand have no value but even current cards as early as 2010 are expensive, Liliana of the veil which came out in 2010 I think was worth $99 bucks prior to her getting a reprint, Same with Karn Liberated. Jace the mindsculptor and Tarmogoyf prior to multiple reprints where well above $100. And almost all reserve list cards are insanely priced now. I bought a bazaar of Baghdad in 1999 for around $3 and it is now $2000.

Lol... Exactly. That neckbeard took a shower and got a clue and is embarrassed by those people . I can smell them through the screen

No one would ever think that they were looking at a room full of PED abusers and yet its absolutely rampant on the tournament level

I'm sure there will be some individual cards that will be worth a bit, but if you look at set values from the very beginning to now, most are not worth a significant amount. Unlimited is worth a lot. A few really old ones are worth a few thousands. Most of the rest are in the hundreds range.

of course the oldest sets are the most valuable, mostly because of scarcity but there are cards worth hundreds of dollars from late 90s sets. Gaias cradle I think is up there... the masters sets are reprints of desirable/valuable cards and they're more limited and less accessible to children due to msrp. They won't appreciate like a lotus but there is room for investments. What investment can you think of that goes up over 100% in less than a year?

Most of the old cards have no value because only cards being played in Modern and legacy are the one with value, old cards I grew up with like Erhnamdjinn, Armagedon are now bulk cards. Check current modern decks like Jund, Humans, UWR, death's shadow and Tron all Tier 1 modern decks from sets as recent as 2007 I believe , most are in the $700 to over 1K range. Then check most of the reserved list cards on how insane they have jumped.

... oh the good old days... ernies, and dark ritual hippies, and one of my personal go toos, thalids and spore counters...

To whoever necro'd this thread, the mid 90s was like more than 2 decades ago. Go play fortnite or something.

Played in the mid 90's during Dark-Tempest, took a 10 year break and played again about 2007-2008 and started re-buying some old power cards. Generally I've done well with cards that were pretty broken and MTG decided they were too strong to reprint. Cards like dual lands and moxes I bought in 2007, and a lot of them have quadrupled in value since then.

But you can also get burned, I have a playset of mana drains, and when Wizards reprinted them, they went from ~$400 each to <$100. I've found unless you're a dealer, or have exceptional patience, it's hard to make significant money consistantly with Magic cards.

Very similar situation. I really enjoying playing with my Emrakul deck. Built all around getting it out, it’s amazing

they actually just recently launched a new Esports platform with $10 million in prize support and I believe there are atleast 10-15million active players so its still relevant.

I went to school with a kid in NJ by the name of Jon Finkel and ended up having a move named after him.

Jon Finkel is like mma Forrest Griffin. Everyone in the know heard of him but much better "competitors" around at the time.

I sold my old deck with 12 dual lands in it years ago. Wish I hadn't.

It's ok man. Lost 4 Rashadan ports during a period of drunkenness and homelessness. Once I got my feet back under me I see Rashadan ports from masqs very pricey. Fucking dumbass I told myself.

Since I made this thread over a year ago I've gotten back into the game. I understand the new mechanics and formats. I prefer commander but very casually, have only played with friends but if i had more time I might get down with the local "incels", wherever that may be.

I've also bought dozens of booster boxes, at least one of every set in the last 2 years and many more. A few iconic, a few masters 17, a few dominaria and more... I also made investments in boxes which I'm sitting on till one day when they're worth selling... my job prevents me from playing more but affords me the disposable income to blow on packs... I also have incredible luck in cracking packs, got a few Amnk invocations from packs (edit > counterspell, daze) and a Nicol Bolas pre release promo...

Buying boosters or booster boxes is a waste of money.

Sure you can get lucky once or twice... but the expected value is negative when it comes to buying cards this way.

Don't do it.

i'd venture to say i've come close to breaking even, plus there is the nostalgia factor of when i could only make decks out of the cards i got in packs or traded for from cards in packs due to there not being local card stores or much internet, etc. and cracking packs has value beyond the rare you get... plus there is a 0% chance that i would buy a Nicol Bolas promo for $100+ or Masterpiece cards for whatever price, so the only way i will ever get those is by cracking packs...

Did you try Arena yet Baddy?

Save your money bro.

Haven't played arena and know nothing about it, can't watch the video due to YT being blocked on my network. i'm not down with digital cards, im sure its cool and i would enjoy it but for now i'll just buy cards and play when i'm around friends... also really like the new Death grips lp, scooped the "indi record store" variant in Denver a month ago...
