Movies Movie News and Notes

LOL This guy got Gina Carano'd.

I still cannot believe that he has a criminal conviction for injuring his ex's hand by pushing her so that he could run away from the beating that she was putting on him.

I enjoyed Barbarian and Weapons, I have faith The Mummy will be good.

Barbarian was good but Weapons was terrible. Sinners is massively overrated IMO but it's The Shining compared to Weapons.

You didn't like Weapons? Man, I really enjoyed that and thought it was pretty original for a horror movie. I never seen Sinners so I can't comment on that yet and Barbarian was good fun too. I had a good laugh when Justin Long's character revealed himself to be a dirtbag.

Nah, it was too stupid and implausible. Not that The Shining or Rosemary's Baby are plausible, but I bought into those movies -- I never bought into Weapons. It didn't help that not a single cop thought to look at (or even look for) security/ring camera footage for a month and that Josh Brolin is the first non-idiot in the whole neighborhood to think of the most obvious first thought after a mass kid disappearance. Just a silly movie with dumb writing.

It lost a little steam by the end, but the first two acts are very strong -- and this is common with newer horror films, e.g. Smile and Men.

I didn't get the hype for Smile, never bothered with the sequel even on a boring, rainy day.

A friend of mine had a hard time believing that all the missing kids leaving at the exact same time didn't wake anything up. I see his and your points but I enjoyed it more than I thought it would. But I can go from Shawshank Redemption to Bio-Dome, I like most movies.

Smile falls apart in the last act but I loved the early going. The motive force psychologically (i.e. trauma response) was clever and well-executed (no horror movie pun intended) and the mood of paranoia as Sosie Bacon began to lose her grip was commendable. The sequel sucked, though.

And so as not to only criticize, for recent horror movies that don't fall apart, I'm a big fan of Longlegs.

To protect those who still haven't gotten around to this one...

Also the "hiding" of the kids was stupid and made no sense, not to mention the inexplicably long-running villain is the most conspicuously bat-shit-looking person ever. They also never explain the rules of their own world, which left me with no stakes as I was never clear on WTF she was even doing or what she "needed" from the whole thing. She wasn't eating/feeding on the kids or their "youth," so WTF was even the point of her being there? It just seemed dumb all the way around.

Hey, you're talking to a film professor who is as at home with Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ingmar Bergman as he is with Steven Seagal, Jim Carrey, and Lifetime original movies. But idiosyncratic as they may be, I still have standards and am not indiscriminate with my praise. I'll take Bio-Dome over Weapons any day ;)

Well I was under the impression that
she was a witch and was trying to expand her life but was obviously failing at it. She looked eccentric but she admitted as much when she was in the couple's house.

So I'm supposed to be scared by a sucky, incompetent villain? At least in Eggers' The Witch we see how witches be witchin'. What even is she trying to do and how is she failing? What does she need with an army of little kids? Did she have a grand plan that she didn't have time to enact? Or is it just contrived BS? And to get taken down by a bunch of kids, it makes me wonder how this goofball Carrot Top of a woman has managed to be a successful witch for so long. It's just too silly IMO.

Fair enough. I do have hope that The Mummy movie will be good. Whether it creeps me out or makes me laugh, I just hope it's good.
