I think the stoppage was justified. People calling the ref an idiot should just shut up! The ref IMO saved the black guys arm from being broke, cause it looked pretty tight to me, if you cranked it, u could of broke it. Shouldn't be any controversy there. Also props for the fast transition, especially at your weight division brotha. Keep it up!

really? how come? i mean what makes you think it wasnt on enough for me to get the tap?

I think your transition was beautiful, really dope and most people would've lost the armbar just going at that speed. But you didn't have his body secure from what I see in the video. Your body was leaning more towards his head than his legs and you didn't grab the pants to prevent him from rolling out. And as you had the armbar you didn't raise your hips into it and then the ref stops it. You looked great, just saying that the ref was in no position to stop the match when armbar escapes do exist. Hence why schools teach us how to get out of them.

yeah i wasnt being confrontational, just honestly wondering. like (i think) i said, I didnt really put pressure on the arm yet. thats why my hips werent bridging. I was *just* about to lift my hips when the ref stopped it. could he have escaped? maybe. would he have? probably not.

i dont really grab the pants from armbars, i always feel like the reaching over loses pressure on the shoulder for me. He couldnt turn in to me bc of my foot under his shoulder, and he cant turn away because it will crank his arm. he can escape the way youre talking about, by kind of spinning over his shoulder (and straight into an omoplata). the thing is, the armbar was VERY deep, and my knees were pinched *tight* on his shoulder.

even if he would have started to turn away to escape, he would have been tapping half way through. his elbow was right in the corner of my hip, ready to be cranked.

thanks for the tips though, ill have to try grabbing the knee again to see if it works for me.

good job man... next time just pop his elbow. i competed saturday as well (in NAGA RI... took first in my div) and i left 2 kids holding there elbows as they walked off the mat. the way i see it, they're not my training partners so if i pop their elbows too bad. crank away

You don't have to rip his arm off to secure and hold the lock convincingly. Just make sure you hold it until the ref actually puts his hands on you before breaking the lock next time. While that armbar was pretty tightly applied there, it was held for so briefly and the ref's call was so unconvincing and unauthoratative that I can understand why your opponent was confused/annoyed by the stoppage. In alot of these tourneys, the refs are really quite poor at controlling and managing the match even if they do technically know the rules of grappling, so it is really on you the competitor to wait until the ref steps up and asserts himself before you let go of a hold. His words are not enough, make him approach and touch one of you before letting go next time (again, this doesn't mean you need to crank the armbar until he does, you just need to hold it tight and gradually apply more pressure).

The guy didn't tap so the match should have continued. However it looks like the guy was on his was to "Snap"ville.

i like to make sure i have one foot over the body and one over the face, if you just have the shin against the body like that it makes it easy to backwards roll out of it... i think that guy was too big to do that though and he wasn't gonna escape

He good jobbut badstoppage on your part I have to agree with the comment earlier about holding until the ref touches you, I am planning on going to a tourney in mid july and if I am good enough to get a sub on someone the ref is going to have to touch me just cause thats how I train. but good job anywyaz

Hey guys, I just competed this weekend at the US grappling, Diamond State Games. I ended up waiting around for a LONG time (of course) and then fighting twice and taking second in my division. This first fight ended with a little controversy, but you can decide for yourself. I say he was gonna tap for sure. Blue belt, super heavy division.

The second fight was kind of boring, I might post it later if anyone cares. Basically I fought a 320 lb dude who just smashed me from half guard while I tried to work, then when i started to get frustrated and upa like crazy, he got side body and just stalled for more than half the match. I complained repeatedly to the ref, who told the guy to move, but he didnt really move at all. he ended up losing "one advantage point" for stalling but I thought he should have lost some points or we should have restarted standing up. oh well.

I was way out of my normal or natural weight class, Fighting at 220+ at 235. normally I'm at ~215, and I should be ~200. Still walked away with a silver, so it wasnt a total loss :)

Awesome Video man. Guy totally would have tapped if you put pressure in. I was there too competing No Gi 140-149. Went 2-2. I kinda got dicked over cuz I got maybe an 8 minute break between my last 3 matches. Do you know if there are any pics or do you have any random pics of the event?

Thanks for your patience. Good to see fast big guys who are dynamic with submissions.

i dont really have any pics, and ive been looking for some info and maybe some results of the pro division etc but i still havent found anything.

Finally got to see this match. Wow you're bigger than I remember Firas! Good job escaping that footlock and passing the guard. That blue guy was a douchebag. The ref can always call a match if he feels a competitor is in danger. He was very disrespectful. Smooth armbar transition and congrats on your legitimate win!

Randy mentioned he might be doing Battle at the Beach. Are you doing that one? I'd rather do a US Grappling tournament, but the July one is kinda soon (I'd rather do one in mid-to-late August TTYTT.

Yeah, I just found out too about the US Grappling one that they moved it to Richmond. That makes the drive that much worse for you. Im probably still doing it, its only about 2 hours for me.

I should be going to the BATB, I'm training for it at least :)

In any case, even if you just want to come down for a weekend and train with some different people Tony is really cool about that stuff. Just let me know man.

There's a gi and nogi IBJJF tournament in Pittsburgh on September 22nd. I don't know how big it will be, but I'm trying to get the word out. It costs about the same as the US Grappling one.

it didn't look like he tapped in the video. but if the ref stopped the fight cause he thought the guy tapped from a sub that was sunk in deep. then you my friend deserve the win. very fast armbar transition too. almost got the left leg over his chest.

2 seconds later he would have been tapping like hell. You tapped me with the exact same armbar last month, It was tight as hell.

no way black dude tapped. oh well you when some, lose some. the transition was sweet. the armbar didnt look all that set to me though. he was rolling before the ref even called the stop. my question to you is WHY didnt you crank it? was he out of position for you to finish him? :icon_conf next time you get someone in the position to submit them, lock in the tech and dust em off is what i say. dont leave it to question. i'm competing in NAGA's light heavyweight intermediate this year and i intend to do just that. :D
