Hey guys, I just competed this weekend at the US grappling, Diamond State Games. I ended up waiting around for a LONG time (of course) and then fighting twice and taking second in my division. This first fight ended with a little controversy, but you can decide for yourself. I say he was gonna tap for sure. Blue belt, super heavy division.

The second fight was kind of boring, I might post it later if anyone cares. Basically I fought a 320 lb dude who just smashed me from half guard while I tried to work, then when i started to get frustrated and upa like crazy, he got side body and just stalled for more than half the match. I complained repeatedly to the ref, who told the guy to move, but he didnt really move at all. he ended up losing "one advantage point" for stalling but I thought he should have lost some points or we should have restarted standing up. oh well.

I was way out of my normal or natural weight class, Fighting at 220+ at 235. normally I'm at ~215, and I should be ~200. Still walked away with a silver, so it wasnt a total loss :)

Nice work, and props for competing, I personally wouldn't be happy with 1-1.

what happened there? did the ref call it? 'cause dude definitely didn't tap (visibly on camera)

that dude was NOT getting out of that armbar (if you decided to crank it, which u didnt, cuz u obviously were under the impression he tap'd). if u were mean in competitions, like ME, he would have lost his arm right there.
by the way, that armbar transition was a thing of beauty! very impressive!
good job!

i think the match should have continued until you broke his arm, because the ref didn't stop it, it looked like you let go when people were pounding the mat. should have been restarted with him in a full armbar, so he could really tap

in tournaments it's a good rule of thumb to 1 go for the break, and 2 never let go of the submission until the ref tells you to.

I've seen incidents similar to this where a guy taps, the ref doesn't see it, and the other guy lets go. then the guy who tapped claims he never tapped.

Nice armbar transition! Very quick and clean for your size.

thanks for the comments guys.

yeah the ref actually called it, thats why i stopped...i had it in place ready for the crank and he called it (I guess the guy did something that looked like a tap, he said he was just trying to "swim" his arm under my leg).

He probably didnt tap, but he was about to.

im not happy with it, and i dont like medaling for only winning one fight. Im trying to get down to 220 for the next competition, July 14th in Richmond. Well see how it goes, looking at the mistakes I made this time I should be bringing home the gold :)

That arm bar was going to be deep. If he wasn't going to tap to that then he wasn't going to have an arm.

Wow your a fast fatty, pretty quick transition there. . .

Tournaments you gotta be vicious. . .look to break/nap your opponents with each attack. Obviously you don't want to injure someone, but you gotta have the mean when you put the subs on. . . Because you did not crank it right away he woulda made the escape (but into a triangle, right? right?)

Other comments - You looked perfect for an omaplata as soon as you pulled guard, gotta make that switch FAST. . .

I don't see any sign from the ref signaling a stop nor do I see any kind of tap...

Yeah, im not really a mean guy and im used to putting pressure on slowly from class...but i guess everyone is right, i gotta be a little more vicious. i will definitely keep it in mind.

and yes, if he could have, he would have "escaped" right into my triangle.

that guard pull was admittedly sloppy as hell, i normally pull into a much tighter closed guard and work from there but im not sure what was wrong with me. my omoplatas have been pretty weak, although I have been working hard on them. Its the biggest gap in my bottom game right now but i am working on it.

thanks for the comments.

well i didnt just stop. the ref said "stop stop stop" or something along those lines. you cant see his face in the vid but he did say something.

maybe I havent been that clear, I didnt just stop. personally, I didnt even feel a tap, i would not have stopped had the ref not told us to stop. thats why the guy gets up and yells at the ref and does not just keep fighting.

What a shitty ref. Shouldn't have stopped the match. I think most people would've escaped from that armbar. And yeah it's a good rule of thumb in tournaments to go for the break,

really? how come? i mean what makes you think it wasnt on enough for me to get the tap?

hayliks do you still compete?

I was going to compete 3 months ago at a tournament in Austin, TX. There was nobody in my division and they ended up having me ref instead (i got my fee back).

Before that I competed January of '06. I would have competed a lot more if #1 I had a car and could get consistent BJJ training and if #2 I didn't have so many injuries. So I just try to pick a month that I'm not so busy, see the tournaments around and just train to compete and be as healthy as I can for that one tournament. I'm thinking that in '09 or '10 I want to compete in the black belt division of the mundials.
