A Christmas Story
There Will Be Blood (Good movie but overrated by many)
Star Wars (any of them)
LOTR (any of them)
The Hobbit
99% of Super Hero movies

12 years a slave. long drawn out fucking boring movie. I get it slavery sucks wrap it the fuck up.

It was good but I think you again had a bit of a makeup situation there from the superior Shame arguably not getting the attention it deserved due to the subject matter and 12 years obviously being vastly more award/media friendly.

Honestly I felt that ended up being disappointing that one of the best black directors of this generation needed to make a "black film" to get his due.

Self-explanatory. I just finished the (wildly disappointing) Godfather series, having not seen it in many years, and this topic came to mind.

1. The Departed
2. The Godfather: Part II
3. Fight Club

Go.

I actually came in here to say Godfather II . I know we'll probably get ripped on for it but it was slow for me. It's not terrible by any means but it's very overrated IMO.

Most of you are mentioning widely accepted loved movies.

Donnie Darko, Drive, these are overrated.

Is Donnie Darko rated a "great movie"?

I mean, I thought it was great, but it's not really considered "great" as such, is it?

Drive was cool, but I much prefer "Pusher", which was Refn's (the director of Drive) breakthrough movie.

I liked both Darko and Drive. I thought both were unique, interesting, and easy to sit through.

I really don't know what there is to hate about Donnie Darko. I get hating Drive if you don't like noir.

I'm surprised that others have agreed, or at least conceded that it's a valid opinion.

Star Wars is extremely overrated.

I legit cannot sit through any of the first or second generation installments. Rogue One I could stand.

I try to understand them because my nephews love SW and people dedicate their lives to it. I just can't see it.

The last 5 min of Rogue One were worth the price of admission for me. That was awesome.

I was ready to insult the op for mentioning a classic like The Godfather II but because you started off with The Departed, I shall not. The only redeeming quality in that movie is Ray Winstone because he's a fucking stone cold killer when it comes to acting. Everything else about that movie is utter dogshit and completely unbelievable (selling computer chips or whatever to the Chinese? Lol, the government would have been all over their asses with a sting operation if that deal went down. And the Thai coke dealers in Infernal Affairs are infinitely cooler.) It's shocking Scorsese relies on cheesy and cliched songs to bolster the tepid directing and amateur script with dialogue so over the top it became a joke. Marky Mark says fuck a lot, ohhh Oscar worthy! Fuck that movie.

I'll add that nearly every movie Scorsese has made past the 90s is an overrated piece of garbage. The man's had a longer period of bad movies than good movies as it stands now.

The Revenant is also overrated. Dull story with a director so in love with himself he might as well have filmed him filming the movie and looking at camera telling the audience what an auteur he is. Garbage.

The general public has dogshit taste.

I think the problem some had with Donnie Darko was that it ended up getting a Matrix like fanbase of not very smart conspiracy theory type people claiming it was a work of supreme genius.

Drive is probably just down to expectation I'd guess, people hoping for something along the lines of the opening chase though out but getting a very slow paced noir romance/drama instead.

Cape Fear was the last film he took even the slightest risk or exercised even the slightest artistry. And that was in 1991.
Before that, Taxi Driver was masterful, and Raging Bull, Last Temptation, and Mean Streets were great. After that, virtually everything either bores me or is affirmatively bad.

Actually if I had to name the most overrated movie since The Departed, it would probably be Wolf of Wall Street. The movie's entire popularity was based on bros living vicariously through the film's sexcapading and denigrating of women while convincing themselves they're appreciating art. And, even if it's actually one of DiCaprio's stronger performances, he's still a shit actor.

Frankly, the original Godfather may be slightly overrated on its own, but Godfather II is markedly less impressive because, whereas the original hung its hat on stellar performances by Brando, Pacino, and Duvall, in the sequel, Brando's character is dead, Pacino's portrayal becomes a caricature of itself, and Duvall gets fuck all for screen time.

The Departed is just all-around a shitty film with shitty performances. It's like if The Godfather were directed by a music video director. DiCaprio and Wahlberg always blow because they're not dynamic talents, but Damon and Nicholson are genuinely talented actors. Yet Damon's performance is as boring and cookie cutter as the film itself and Nicholson's is cartoonish, perhaps to make up for everyone else.

For Scorsese, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Cape Fear, Raging Bull, and The Last Temptation of Christ are all markedly better than The Departed, and probably all are better than Goodfellas.

For Fincher, Se7en and Gone Girl are certainly better than Fight Club.

Go.

Agreed on 'The Godfather' comment.

I don't know anyone that holds 'The Departed' in really high regard tho.

I despise Fight Club, mainly due to the ending

so a guy was fighting himself in the parking lot, and NOBODY said 'what the hell is going on here?" 'why is he doing that?'

he bangs HBC upstairs, and then immediately after downstairs asks her why she's there? and she doesn't respond like 'uh, what? we just smashed?'

I realize that the point was to keep the ending a surprise, but it's retarded. Do a better job writing and editing so that ending is still a surprise but there's not MASSIVE plot holes b/c of it, i.e. the Usual Suspects or Primal Fear

I had major beef with The Depahted's music as well. I can't remember what they're called, but there's that one band who do all of America's Irish music. That shit was so cheap and I couldn't believe Marty would use it. I just gotta assume that shit automatically starts playing anytime someone speaks in a Boston accent and they couldn't edit it out

Honestly he did show his age rather there didn't he? both in the new music he picked(Dropkick Murphys?) and how much old music he reused. I spose you could argue that Goodfella's and Casino actually used a good deal of music that was not of the era's being depicted but the films as a whole felt tied to an earlier time for me so it didn't matter as much.

I can't really dig the hamminess of older movies, and the acting in general if i'm being honest.

Like other than the original b&w 12 Angry Men I don't quite understand why some of the older films are still considered great

Godfather 2 i think one of best movies ever a master piece
Tells two stories of two dons
