Most consecutive championship defenses per weightclass

That's true but Steward is still widely regarded as perhaps the greatest trainer in boxing history. Especially in the professional ranks. He trained so many champions & contenders I couldn't even name them all. Some of them he produced himself. Yeah, Wlad was more accomplished than Vitali due to all of the title defenses he made and how long his reigns were altogether. But, I agree, Vitali was the better fighter overall. Few would argue against it.
Steward is the last great american trainer that I can really think of, I guess we have a few really good ones hanging around but not like the Futch's, Dundee's,Arcel's and Steward really was a lot younger than those guys.

I was was always a fan of his but for some reason, can't remember if it was Seano or Sharkey, both of those guys had these bizarre animus' with several folks, Seano, to this day still isn't big on Duran, Foreman, Norton and Sharkey was an old line Ali hater. I think it was one of those guys who said Manny was "an unstable man". I'd never heard that before, don't know if it's true and I don't know all the ins and outs of his dealings with his fighters. I did hear that he and an already old Hearns fell out because Manny took 50 percent of Tommy's earnings all along his career, if that's true, that's not fair. Other than that, I don't know anything about his personal life, might have heard the rumors, one even that he was gay but I think the "unstable" talk was mentioned after the Kronk gym was going under and we all wondered why a gym with million dollar fighters and a million dollar trainer would have financial problems when gyms with a lot less function just fine.

as far as Wlad/Vitali, I just thought Wlad had a meaner streak and was more passionate in there, Vitali was a nice guy and he got absolutely creamed by Corrie Sanders. I heard that Wlad wasn't big on Steward himself and told Vitali that he was an asskisser or words to that effect. Don't know why he would say something like that to his bro but I hear he did.

Regarding the “ unstable man” comment-Manny once said something very similar regarding Mclellan in a documentary. That he never met a man as unstable like him. I could be paraphrasing . Are you sure you’re not confusing it with that?

no, absolutely not. I was going on about how Steward shouldn't have money problems with Kronk, then, someone, like I say, I think either Seano or Sharkey said, that he had a gambling problem and that beneath the facade he was "an unstable man" how the hell they came about that info I have no clue and I have never seen any official source say much of anything negative about manny. Some of his fighters did but never in the media.

I did hear that Manny was raked over the coals by the media for how he fucked up in the first Leonard-Hearns fight but I never saw those firsthand, only read about them in Ralph Wiley's "Serenity".

Anyways, Seano's pretty good about sniffing out when he's spoken of, maybe he'll come out a tell but sadly, I'm not sure if venerable old Sharkey is online much at all these days or what his health is like.

Steward was younger than the trainers you mentioned but he had a lot of great fighters. He trained over 40 champions. Kronk was, and still is, legendary.

You've confused the K-bros. Vitali was the one with the mean streak that beat Corrie Sanders. Wlad is the one that got creamed by him. The brothers went to war in sparring early on when both were still amateurs and Vitali beat the hell out of him. Somehow Wlad allegedly ended up with a broken leg. Vitali was the older & bigger brother by 5 years. That age difference is significant when you're only a junior level amateur at the time like Wlad was so maybe that's all it was. However, I also believe that Wlad himself once admitted that Vitali would've taken him so there's that.

i can only tell them apart by their faces really and have been confusing them for years, the ugly, mean looking one, that's the one who's the best, not the guy Sanders beat. I'll always confuse the two but the ugly one was the better one in my mind. I can't say I saw much of either after they went on to fight the so and so's who no one will ever remember.

Let’s make it easier lol @Seano

Lol can’t blame you. Those guys are twins.

@mozfonky whats your favorite boxing read?
Too many to name
Muhammad Ali: His Life And Times
A Neutral Corner-AJ Liebling (I have the legendary "Sweet Science" which is considered the best boxing book ever but never read it from cover to cover, it is fascinating to see just how the sport has changed).
The Greatest: My Own Story-Muhammad Ali with Richard Durham
In This Corner-Peter Heller
In The Corner: Great Boxing Trainers Talk About Their Art-Dave Anderson
Sugar Ray-also by Dave Anderson
Smokin' Joe-Joe Frazier with Phil Berger
many, many, many other great ones, instructionals by Demspey,Frazier, Edwin Haislet (who Bruce "plagiarized" extensively in his Tao Of Jeet Kune Do, i put plagiarized in italics because he never published the book, his widow did), Bios by Holmes, Duran, Leonard, and so many that I haven't even read but skimmed enough to know they are great like the books on Joe Louis and marciano. Many, many, many books that I've bought and hope I'll have the time to read someday.

You’ve piqued my interest in the topic.
Seano goes all out when he goes all out though, that's why I don't like getting him started, hopefully he'll just come in and say, "nope, wasn't me, don't know what Moz is talking about". If we had a better search function I could probably find the thread from some 20 years ago.

It's the names that throw me everytime. Kinda like, even 40+ years after my idol Prince was in his prime, I still get his keyboardist and guitarist's names mixed up, wendy and lisa, even though I know which is which, I still end up being caught out on a prince forum looking like a dumbfuck getting their names mixed up, will always happen.

Yeah the ugly one that looked mean was better lol. That's the easy way to remember it.

I've found one guy on the forum, King Kabuki, aka our fave mod Sinister (I think) called him unstable I'm checking it out now:

"Manny's a good trainer, truly one of the best in the business (I wouldn't go as far as to call him the best, he can't take credit for a lot of his Fighters being monumentally talented), but beneath that lies a pretty unstable man. The Boxing Community has known this for years. Which is why no one says anything regarding why Kronk REALLY had to close down."

trying to find the gambling reference.

oh no, it's sinister direct: he'll know: "Jeff said it up there. Manny has serious gambling problems, and has burned a lot of bridges with people in the business that could have helped him keep Kronk alive. Kronk closed down because Manny quit giving a shit about it. Plain and simple."

Seano might go on about who he hates, but ill be damned if Moz doesnt find a way to fit Prince into any discussion he can.
