More goofy workouts from UFC fighters - Fabricio Werdum edition

Thanks.. I'm really going to read this later.(no sarcasm)

I may have been a bit generic in my reply but all in all most stable exercises do suck. I use the bosu ball for pushups because they feel exceptionally nice, it engages a little bit of core and etc. But in general, studies have been found that unstable exercises actually decrease athletic perfomance (especially lower body exercises) and there's the dangerous part as well. Unstable training may work as something occasional and on basics exercises.

As a rule of thumb, you don't want anything that uses external weight to be unstable. I can tolerate small additions but look at the first exercise he is doing. Not one unstable platform, but two, that's just ridiculous you can't build anything out of it, my eyes hurt watching that. The second exercise is pretty dangerous on the lombar, when your lombar is being stretched/flexed you don't want to absorb any impact. The third video is ok, explosion training is legit.

Of course this doesn't mean that he's 100% getting injured, nor that he is going to fight bad next time but loooks like a bad training, I'm sure something better could be done, I hope this routine didn't last for long.

Lol, great thread! I've always shuddered at how these guys train. Where are they getting this nonsense? It's like complete moron trainers are just making it up as they go. And we wonder why there are so many training related injuries.

I mean, it's definitely not Cain Velasquez tier, but it's interesting to say the least

The first one looks like a good way to pull out of a fight.
The second one looks like they are trying to strengthen up kicks, and build some spring off his back.
The third is the only one that looks legit, however one misstep and your shin or knee will be taking some damage.

But wtf do i know...

The first one will tear your ACL off the fucking bone lmao

I've been warning people about the stupidity of cursons training for awhile but he's really popular with "functional strength" MMA types atm.

I've never understood where there would be a huge benefit from weighted stabilization exercises? Most are risky enough using bodyweight without the additional concern of handling weight in some form throughout the movement.

This is exactly right. S&C is all about appearances. If you come with some complicated bullshit and call it "cutting edge" a whole lot of eyes are gonna light up, even if it's worse than worthless. The vast majority of S&C I've seen in MMA is just terrible and I think it has a lot to do with all the injuries in the sport. What balancing on a rubber ball while you do explosive leg presses has to do with kicking someone in the face is beyond me.

Werdum should listen more Sherdog posters and stop doing things that work good for him.

A fighter coached by Sherdog would be the GOAT.

Tony Ferguson is a great fighter that objectively has the worst deadlift form anyone has ever seen.

The notion that you can't criticize fighters ever is retarded. Let's just do away with all discussion boards while we're at it.

It's fine. To strengthten the ACL and prevent injuries you would use exercises that involve jumping and stability.

I didn't see the box jumps. Those things can rupture an Achilles if you don't land properly. I always err on the side of caution with those. I step off rather than jump off.

Box jumps are mainly to be used as a plyometric exercise. The whole point is to jump off and train the qualities of the muscle that improve explosive power. To gain this you have to jump off the box. Plus, to land properly you have to actually do the exercise. If you took one athlete who did plyometrics but focused on landing properly and another athlete who didn't, and both competed in a sport that involved jumping, the latter athlete would likely be more likely to be injured on landing in the sport.

Can plyometrics like box jumps increase the risk of injury? They might, especially if done incorrectly, but the fact is if someone is training for maximum athletic performance it necessitates some increase in the risk of injury that can be minimized, but never eliminated. To some extent, it's a risk athletes have to take if they want to be high level.

Ouch, you can feel the tennis elbow from that first GIF. Can't one of his bro secret service guys teach him proper form?

Pretty bad when he can't use proper form even with lady weights
Michelle looks like she's in better shape and can kick Barack's ass.

Agreed. It also looks like he was using her weights for the exercises

You're dumb. This is the optimal way to train for MMA, Dos Anjos and BJ Penn proved that. Old Marinovich method.
