More dominant as a champion: Islam or Usman?

Close. Usman has more defenses. Islam faced higher quality guys at the time they fought. Volk was #1 and Charles #3 p4p and Islam finished them both. KO'd volk with a round 1 headkick. And subbed the top bjj guy. Both poirier and volk have owned max in the cage several times.

Alot of usmans wins have aged poorly except strickland.

Islam - volk (c), poirier, oliveira (c), tsarukyan

Usman - Woodley (c), Colby, Strickland (c), dos anjos (c), burns, masvidal

Usman struggling again Colby don't age well
There is a new generation of welterweight now (Shavkat , JDM , Garry ) , they are more dangerous than Usman past opponents

Volk was #1 a weight class below, islams stand out win was olivera

Neither guy has been that dominant in their title runs. Usman Dominated Jorge, sure, but the rest of his defences were close fights. He got hurt bad by Burns before stopping him, and both Colby fights were super close. Sure, he got finishes, but he never looked insanely dominant or unbeatable.

Islam is in the same boat. He was way more dominant on his run to the title than he has been since winning it. He has that one clear win over Volk, but his other fight with Volk was razor close, and the Dustin fight was a back-and-forth war.

To answer the thread's question, I guess I have to say Usman appeared a little more dominant that Islam in his title run, simply because he had more fights where he dominated the opposition while defending his belt (barely).

Most of Usman's defenses were against former LW's.
Kind of a silly thing to mention when Burns and Masvidal weren't even close to title contenders at LW but were at WW and had fights at WW to become ranked there first before fighting for the belt.

Most of the wins you mentioned don't even count for the purpose of this thread. Usman didn't beat Strickland, Woodley, or Dos Anjos while he was champion. The only defences he had were against Jorge, Colby, and Burns. And the only one of those that was straight up dominated was Jorge.

As for Islam, only Volk x2 and Poirier count, and only one of those wins was actually domination.

Usman's aura was more special. But, Islam will probably go down as the better fighter down the road.

Usman padded his defences with too many colby and masvidal stupid fights

He’s not dominant in anything besides beating a pint sized volk twice out of 3 fights
Meh
back in the day gsp is one of the biggest ww
dude look like a white gorilla
hes big but hes also shreded to the bones

that means gsp fought bloated fighters like serra matt hughes and penn
thats according to your logic btw

i dont even have to post gsp pics back then for you to realize this

If you look at the total win streak... and not the championship fights Usman by a mile... prior to ever fighting for a belt he beat Leon Edwards , Demian Maia, Sean Stricland, RDA, Covington, add Woodley, masvidal, Burns and Colby and it's better than Charles, dustin, Volk and hooker....

Islam is having a fantastic run but has only defended once vs a true LW. I'm going with Usman for now.
Yeah, I love Islam but MAN, Kamaru's run was fucking spectacular.

I still have NO IDEA how the hell Kamaru made 170. There is no way he ever entered the cage south of 190, and probably topped 200 on more than one occasion. The guy is HUGE for that weight class.

Quantity - Usman

Quality - Islam

I can see this.

Usman somewhat benefitted from 170 being a semi-shitpile at the time. Woodley managed to turn the division into some narcolepsy inducing shit, and it seems that the entire division suffered as a result.

Islam's been fighting straight killers in (what I believe) is the UFC's most frightening weight class. 155 is the perfect blend of power and technique. Once you get to 170, things get a little bit dicier.

Marty Usman just a Jacked Nebraskin country boy. Deal wit it.
