Multiplat Monster Hunter World

Have you tried melee at all? I never used it in the previous games due to lack of dual analog on the 3DS, and have read that early game bows are lacking in DPS. It might be worth using melee for a bit until you can get you hands on some better bows with elemental/status effects.
Will try. I've always stuck with bows in any game that offered them. I've upgraded my bow to where it does 144 damage and it works but it still feels like I'm just trudging along.

Holy fuck, this game is the best thing since sliced bread (new hunter here).

Fuck Destiny 2, this game completely fills all my Diablo loot craving

Chasing that marshmellow bat around with my slow as fuck greatsword was quite the challenge though.

I'm amazed at the creature design in this game and how much fun it can actually be to do the same thing over and over again. I hardly advance in the main story cause I'm too busy going to war with that Barroth for the 40th time lol

Is there any end game to this game and is it fun? Like bosses with modifiers or something? That would be stupid cool.

Ranged weapons tend to be more party oriented weapons (and are great in groups for a multitude of reasons) but they can be tough solo because of "effective attack range" and the normal bow especially because it needs to charge. Heavy bowgun is rough as well because it's horribly slow. One of my good buddies always plays bow and some encounters are just rough. Gotta bring your patience!

Maybe I'll try the katana or sword and shield then.

That katana (or long sword in general) has a sweet mechanic.

You fill a gauge with normal attacks, then you can unleash a combo with R2/RT which modifies the gauge.
If you fill that modified gauge again with normal attacks you can unleash some pretty sick moves with R2/RT + triangle/Y or O/B.

It's a very fun weapon once you swing around with it for a while.

Long Sword and Great Sword are my preferred weapons to focus on. Long Sword not only has great combos, it also the perfect blend of mobility, speed, DPS, and range. It can cut tails, inflicts status effects pretty fast, and has a nice retreating attack that of Triangle+Circle during a combo that not only puts some good distance between you and the target it has like a 270 degree arc that is great for clearing trash mobs when you're getting swarmed.. Some of the faster weapons can stack on the status effects faster but their range is to short to get good tail swipes in. It's really an all around great weapon.

How do you actually see if a status effect applies? Is it just visual clues on the monster itself or an actual marker or something?

See, I didn't even know about that retreating attack you just told me. Will try over and over again tonight haha

It's so amazing how much stuff there is to master in this game, all the while getting rewarded for your efforts in a non lootbox bullshit way.

I'm absolutely hooked. Bought the game 3 days ago and put in 18.5 hours. Helped that I was on vacation.

I play Insect Glaive. Weapon is awesome, able to mount like crazy and fly all over the screen unleashing Darth Maul-esque attacks. Also, the bug gives you stat boosts.

I took down T Rex a few times now and grinding is insanely fun. You will have some awesome fights in this game with how the monsters interact with each other and yourself. The monsters are badass.

This is the first PS4 game that has truly hooked me in.

I will say though, that multiplayer makes grinding a ton easier. It is very fun and I know people will say "the enemies scale with the more people you have in your party" but I find that to be horse shit so far.

I'm able to go into hunts 1/3 the way through and reap the rewards from the work of other players a bit too easily.

Hmm, may have to try this one. Is multi player a requisite to play or finish the game or can it be played single player the whole time? Not too into multiplayer games.

Yeah, it's just a visual cue. My favorite is poison, for non poison type enemies it really speeds things up since it inflicts them with damage over time. When you attack, some of the contacts you'll see a puff of purple smoke. When you've built up enough, you notice the monster will have purple drool coming out of their mouth, you will also see continuous damage tick ever few seconds. The other 2 status effects are sleep and paralyze, and they're pretty obvious when they kick off. They're a lot more situational so I don't use them, where the poison effect has a lot more utility.

You said you made it to the Coral map with the puffball bat looking thing, so you should have access from an optional side quest you get at the botanical research are to hunt a Rathian in the Ancient Forrest. You can use his material to build a nasty poison Long Sword called the Wyvern Blade "Leaf". The gloves you can craft from Rathian parts also have the skill to apply poison faster that you can stack with the Pukei-Pukei waist armor which has the same skill. Wearing both pieces levels the skill up. The Rathian/Pukei Palico weapon also have poison damage to further increase the speed of the poison build up. The Rathian materials can be used to build a Poison Charm as well to even further increase your poison stacking skill to Lv. 3.

I have all of this stacked up on my main monster hunting gear, and I've been making pretty short work of most of the stuff that comes my way. Going back to lower level hunts is a cake walk.

Killed up to fish boss haven't used multiplayer yet.

It can be played completely single player. Co-op is an option, and like Squall had said, when you're farming for materials it can really speed things up. I prefer to play single player a majority of the time, because I enjoy the challenge and you get a better feel for mechanics of each fight. When you co-op, it can get really chaotic and people are running and diving all over the place.

The answer to this is, have defense 70+ (I had mine to 75 and it is much easier.) Hunter rank 4 or 5.

Hah! With your name + avatar I bet you're loving the Gunlance...

Also Final Fantasy VIII has the best OST out of all the FF games. I used to say it was FFVII but I can't stop listening to Balamb Garden and Fishermens Horizon (Distant Worlds) every morning as I get ready for work.

Last side note but I was learning some FFIX on the piano and noticed that the entire soundtrack is ripped from Chopin's minor Opus work (1-9) and listening to them back to back with FFIX is almost laughable at times due to how much they sampled from his work. It's ironically why it's my least favorite FF OST as well despite learning some of it for practice.

Anjanath pushes my shit in, wasn’t even close. Trying out the charge blade, and am full on everything. Is there storage or something?

I was undecided until Friday when it came out and decided to finally get it. I didn't want to be waiting for the PC release. Had a couple friends convince me to get it and just reading about it and hearing about it on this thread is really getting me anxious to play it. Shitty Amazon Prime slacking on their delivery. Reading the descriptions I am almost certain it will keep me busy for a long time and it's the type of game I want to get hooked on.

Not in mission, you can only bring up to the item cap for potions and what not. You can increase that capacity by bringing the components along. Like you can only have 10 mega potions, but if you can bring 10 extra Potions + 10 Honey and craft them in mission.

Other things that are handy that will help clear tough initial hunts are the flash bang ammo for your arm cannon thingy. Shoot them in the face and they go blind for a good bit, locking them down and opening them up for some free damage. If it's a flying beast and you get them in the air, they come crashing down and it acts like a knock down.

You can also bring 2 of each trap, so you can have 2 shock traps and 2 net traps, then components for 2 more of each for a total of 4 of each trap. The traps immobilize the monster for a good chunk of time for some great burst damage. I haven't done much of this in MHW, but in previous MH games, the more traps you used the faster they broke out so you get a little bit of diminishing returns on the effectiveness. But if you just have a tough hunt you're trying to clear, these are good ways to get the upper hand and cheese out a win.

I stated it in an earlier post, but Anjanath went down pretty easy using the poison Long Sword from Pukei-Pukei. Once you apply the effect it's a constant damage over time poison damage. As long as you keep the pressure on, you can keep the effect active.

Also, don't forget to hit up the Canteen prior to each quest to add to your HP/Stamina and other effects like Attack Up. You lose the effect if you get KO'd, but there is a Canteen at your camp if this happens.
