Modern MMA fighters that will get the most CTE

Strickland. No contest.

Dude has no impulse control. At all.

  • He'll end up taking MASSIVE amounts of damage on a 6 fight loss streak in the UFC.
  • Then retire.
  • Then pop into BKFC for a one-off where he takes a shit-ton more damage in a loss.
  • Then retire.
  • Then pop into a Jake Paul undercard fighting Elton John's son, or some stupid shit. He'll take a shit-ton more damage in a loss.
  • Then retire.
  • Then enter a headbutt competition in Fight Circus because he's broke. And bored. He'll take a shit-ton more damage in a loss.

Etch this in stone. Bookmark this thread if you want. That idiot is going to 'fight' as long as he can lift a pencil.

Gaethje is a good pick indeed. Holloway too even though I feel like him and JDM manage to be evasive enough to reduce damage. Hill is definitely getting himself some good CTE.
Holloway evasive? He uses his head as defence, my first pick for CTE would be him.

CTE is kinda rarer in MMA because they take way less damage to the head than boxers. I know people want to point to Tony Ferguson and Diego Sanchez, but they were crazy mfs before and their change can be just attributed to aging.

Western Boxing is the absolute worst because of the fight length. Bar-none. And I say Western Boxing because Muay Thai and Lethwei are short, comparatively speaking.

It's actually kind of stupid. The head trauma a professional boxer takes in a single 12 round fight is staggering. And for what reason? To go to a 12 round decision even though EVERYONE knows who's going to win by the end of round 5. Yes, there are exceptions, but they're actually quite rare.

That's not even factoring in the damage these guys take in sparring, which is what fucked Mickey Rourke up so badly.

I remember when the Conor/Floyd circus was in full swing and an interviewer asked Jim Lampley what he thought Conor's chances were against Floyd:

And I quote:
"Conor McGregor has spent a total of 21 minutes on his feet in his last TEN fights. He's about to go 36 minutes in ONE fight against Floyd Mayweather."

In terms of sheer brain trauma, Western Boxing is unparalleled. The reason we occasionally hear about deaths in the boxing ring, and almost NEVER hear about it in MMA, is because some of these boxers are rolling into round 8 fully concussed, and possibly bleeding in the brain.

Hard to say. There's definitely a big genetic component to it. Some people are a lot more prone to develop it than others. Honestly, if you have the APOEε4 gene you probably shouldn't be competing in combat sports or football, hockey, etc.

You never know who will or won't it seems, who would think that Nam Pham would have it so much worse than Wanderlei, Overeem, Leben (who also was a heavy drinker and drug user) etc.
I think Roy Nelson and Mark Hunt took more damage than anyone I can think of. Nelson's chin was so good that he took horrific beatings from JDS, Stipe, Werdum, Overeem, Barnett, Lewis and others without getting KO'd. And then there were fights where he did go down like Arlovski, Hunt and Sergei (very late in his career)...and a few later bareknuckle matches. Hunt fought many heavy hitters in both MMA and K-1. He and Ray Sefo used to stand there with their hands down and trade punches.

This guy is an example of someone who took massive beatings from some of the best HWs ever like Ali and Foreman. The ref stopped a few of his fights but he was never KO'd. Still alive, age 87, and was speaking at events not that long ago. 93 fights at HW

The guy portrayed in the movie "Raging Bull" is another example. Over 100 fights, lived to 95 and I don't think he had signs of CTE.

Frankie, yes. Elkins.... OH HELL YES. Legit feel bad for his hypothetical future, as weird as that sounds.
In his younger days, Frankie had unique style with darting footwork (a bit like Cruz) that avoided damage. That ended as he almost got KO'd by Maynard in their last 2 fights then started to age and slow down. He fought until he was 41 at LW and FW, which is pretty crazy. A few others have done that, but they didn't face the same level of competition.

Off the top of my head, these guys are likely in the high-risk category.

Max Holloway
Justin Gaethje
Michael Johnson
Roy Nelson
Calvin Kattar
Kris Moutinho (from the Suga fight alone)

It is a shame that so many dedicated MMA fighters are forced to endure such relentless punishment inside the Octagon. In truth though, it’s the way they train that often does the most damage. Repeated blows in sparring — even light ones — accumulate over the years, with thousands of impacts slowly taking their toll on the mind and body. Sean Strickland immediately comes to mind when I think of this.

Also, poor reffing and the absence of a proper catcher leave some fighters exposed to brutal, unnecessary post-concussive blows. Whether from their opponents, gravity, or both, the result is the same. Fighters like Dutch Warrior Overeem may be among those who suffered most from these egregious oversights. This is definitely something to consider.

And while I won’t shed tears over the hard realities of MMA and its potential impact brain health, I do sincerely wish that some of the brave but defensively vulnerable up-and-comers would consider the safer, smarter path offered by #PowerSlap — where training remains impact-free, honor and health are preserved, and the future remains bright.

In steadfast service to the dignity of open-hand combat, the protection of warrior health, and the advancement of impact sports,
