Good afternoon Sherdoggers,

I was going through my regular browse, putting my plan to collect 2025s Saddest Poster Award into action, when someone said, in some random reply, that America is the funniest place on Earth.

As an Englishman, I automatically thought that it was bullshit. To me, English comedy from the 80s to the early 00s ruled supreme. Bottom, Young Ones, Absolutely Fabulous, Little Britain, Peep Show, Harry Enfield and Chums, Garth Morenghis Darkplace, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Monkey Dust, Inbetweeners, Tarrant on TV, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Mr Bean etc, just could not be topped. Then there were the live shows, Bottom, Lee Evans, Ricky Gervais, Al Murray, Dara O Brien, Night at the Apollo, whole host of panel shows where comedians applied their craft, list goes on and on...

Then I was reminded of something. I had no idea what shows were part of any cultural phenomenon since 2010. I cannot for the life of me, name any comedy show that is even semi modern.

So, on that ground, maybe this bloke had a point? Based on the fact that their older shows are still running, and I'm drawing a complete blank on any new British comedies.

So, this thread will probably drop dead in the water, along with the rest of the stones that are my threads, that I've tried to skim along the irradiated swamp that is the Mayberry Lounge, but regardless, I ask...

What is funny in the mainstream nowadays, that doesn't have roots in the early 00s or prior?
Also, who and what is funny in your country?

For culture.

Well, I'm sad to report that fascist liberals have banned comedy here in the US as well. It is so bad here the famous Hollywood comedy clubs, Improv, Comedy Store, Laugh Factory they have to lock up your phone in a bag while you are in the showroom to prevent people's lives from being destroyed for telling a joke.

But I will say if you haven't already seen it, the greatest bit of comedy I have heard in a long time was the Netflix roast of Tom Brady. Although being an Englishman you may not know Tom Brady well enough to get a lot of the references but there was quite a lot of very funny, uncut, uncensored, jokes on all subjects made for the sake of making people laugh.

Norm McDonald is the only funny comedian in America and he's dead.

I also grew up on the British comedies you mentioned. Surprised to see Gimme Gimme Gimme get a mention - I loved that show but it always seemed to be totally overlooked

Personally I'm out of touch with modern comedy as well but I'm out of touch with TV in general. Peep Show was the last British comedy I got into but I lost touch with the whole UK scene when I moved to Canada in the early 00's

No idea what you mean by TS or what is funny about it. Sounds like you are likely one of the sick people that have led to comedy clubs having to lock up everyone's phone so they can actually tell jokes.

It started earlier of course but Always Sunny in Philadelphia comes to mind, I think you can see pretty clear influence from UK comedy and the way its made is similar as well with a smaller number of episodes.

Complaining about being silenced and/or cancelled on your very own Netflix special watched by millions.
Guy have some funny jokes, but not a full set.
Push some joke just to get a reaction of people.
Get some pushback on twitter but that's it.
Goes to Rogan complaining about being canceled.
Get super-famous and sign with netflix.
Deliver a couple of specials with the same old jokes + complaining about be cancelled.
Profit
Rinse and repeat

You don't think the country has gotten overly sensitive? You haven't seen comedians take serious heat with some being "cancelled"? Chappelle jokes about it but knows he is one of the few untouchables. You don't think someone losing their means of income is detrimental? All the comedians admit it's a different time.
