In the first trailer for Matthew McConaughey’s adventure drama Gold, striking it rich is only half the battle — the other half is staying that way.

Directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) and loosely based on the Bre-X mining scandal of the 1990s, the film stars McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a down-and-out prospector who teams up with a canny geologist (Edgar Ramirez) to unearth a massive gold deposit in the jungles of Borneo. But his newfound success also catches the attention of some very powerful parties, from Wall Street to the FBI to the Indonesian military.

Also starring Bryce Dallas Howard Toby Kebbell, Rachael Taylor, Corey Stoll and Bruce Greenwood, Gold opens wide on Christmas Day.

You’ve never seen Eddie Murphy quite like this before. The comedic actor is buckling down for a serious turn in the new film Mr. Church, and EW has an exclusive first look at the emotional drama’s new trailer.

Murphy’s first major role since he toplined the 2012 comedy A Thousand Words, Mr. Church follows a talented personal cook (Murphy) who forms a lasting bond with a dying woman’s (Natascha McElhone) family in 1970s Los Angeles, after they enlist his culinary services for six months. That half-year contract leads to 15 years of genuine connection, as Mr. Church’s life intertwines with his former employer’s daughter, Charlotte (Britt Robertson), in unexpected ways.

Mr. Church was directed by two-time Oscar nominee Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Tender Mercies), who directs here his first major feature since taking helming the Jane Fonda comedy Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding in 2011. Mr. Church opens on Sept. 16.

Joe Manganiello Cast as Deathstroke in Ben Affleck's BATMAN Movie

Joe-Manganiello-Deathstroke-031115-Dragonlord.jpg

Batman will face comic book villain Deathstroke, played by True Blood star Joe Manganiello, in Ben Affleck’s first solo movie playing the Dark Knight.

Affleck recently shared a video online of Manganiello in his Deathstroke get-up, but didn’t reveal the actor underneath the mask or what role the character would play in upcoming films. The actor is also known for his role in the Magic Mike Movies.

DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns confirmed the casting in his first interview discussing his new role overseeing Warner Bros.’ movies based on DC Comics characters.

Johns declined to comment on whether Deathstroke has a cameo in Justice League, which is currently shooting in London. Johns also declined to say when the Batman movie will be released, although the earliest it could likely hit theaters is 2018. Johns and Affleck are writing the script for the new Batman movie, which will be directed by Affleck.

First Trailer for LIVE BY NIGHT Directed and Starring Ben Affleck

Live by Night is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Based on the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name, the film stars Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Chris Cooper. Directed by Affleck, Live By Night opens January 13, 2017.

PUNISHER: WAR ZONE's Lexi Alexander to Direct Chris Benoit Biopic CROSSFACE

Lexi-Alexander-072516-Dragonlord.jpg

It was announced today that Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Lexi Alexander (Punisher: War Zone) has signed on to direct Crossface, the true story of wrestler Chris Benoit. Alexander will direct from a script by Jake Goldberger and Sarah Coulter.

Based on the book, “Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit & the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry” by Matthew Randazzo V, Crossface will tell the story of WWE superstar Chris Benoit as he struggles to maintain his family life, while the pressures of wrestling cause him to spiral out of control.

Benoit was a well respected, world champion wrestler, who, over the course of a weekend in June 2007, murdered his wife and son before taking his own life. It was later discovered that Benoit was posthumously diagnosed with CTE, severe brain degeneration, believed to be associated with his career as a wrestler.

Lexi Alexander is an Academy Award nominee for her short film Johnny Flynton. Her film Green Street Hooligans was the second film ever at SXSW to win both the Best of the Fest and a Special Jury Award. She became the first woman to direct a major comic book film when she took on Punisher: War Zone, based on the Marvel superhero. More recently, Lexi has directed episodes of series including Limitless, Supergirl and Arrow. Alexander is also a World Karate and Kickboxing Champion and an expert in mixed martial arts.

Jeff Nichols to Write and Direct ALIEN NATION Remake

Jeff-Nichols-Alien-Nation-Remake-Dragonlord.jpg

Jeff Nichols is making a deal at 20th Century Fox to write and direct a new version of Alien Nation, the 1988 science fiction thriller that took the mismatched buddy cop concept to the extreme.

The original Alien Nation starred James Caan as a racist cop who is forced to team with a member of an alien race which came to Earth when a ship carrying 300,000 enslaved aliens crashed, with the newcomers assimilating in Los Angeles. That extraterrestrial partner was played by Mandy Patinkin in the Graham Baker-directed original, which spawned a 1989 TV series. Down to its title, the film was a clever metaphor to explore racism, and it seems timeless in relation to current racial politics.

It becomes another thoughtful film for Nichols, who launched in features with Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, and most recently the sci-fi thriller Midnight Special. Perhaps it is too early to speculate about the potential involvement of Michael Shannon in Alien Nation, but perhaps not considering he and Nichols have become regular collaborators and Shannon would be a strong fit for either the human or the alien cop.

First Images from Giant Monster Pic COLOSSAL Starring Anne Hathaway

Last year, news broke that Anne Hathaway had signed on to star in Colossal, a mysterious project from Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo. At the time, it was described as cross between classic kaiju monster flicks and quirky small-town drama: Think Lost in Translation meets Godzilla.

Now, Colossal is ready to make its premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and even now, Vigalondo says he’s not always sure how to best explain the concept to people.

“The movie’s coming from my obvious love towards monster movies, and I was always intrigued by the possibility of setting a monster movie story in a human scale,” he tells EW. “This is a monster movie that collides with a small indie drama, which is an interesting collision.”

ew-colossal-001.jpg

Hathaway stars as Gloria, a boozy New Yorker whose hard-partying ways catch up to her when she loses her job and her fiancé (Dan Stevens). So, she goes to the only place she has left: her northeastern hometown, which Vigalondo says is the U.S. equivalent of his own small town in northern Spain. There, Gloria reconnects with her childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), who owns the local bar. Not exactly the best situation for an alcoholic trying to get clean.

Things take a turn for the strange, however, when Gloria learns that a giant monster is currently stomping through Seoul — and she soon realizes that she has an unusual connection to this otherworldly creature.

ew-colossal-002.jpg

Last fall, Colossal came under fire from Godzilla copyrights holders Toho, who sued the production for copyright infringement. The suit was eventually settled, and Vigalondo says that the legal drama didn’t affect the story as he initially envisioned it. Still, he’s keeping tight-lipped for now about the exact nature of the monster or Gloria’s connection with it.

“We tried to come up with a new monster,” he says. “We’ve seen some of those in many films, and we tried to find something that feels unique. As the movie goes on, and you realize how this monster is connected to Gloria, you understand the nature of the beast from a new angle. So yeah, the monster has a twist.”

The one thing he will say is that there’s a certain similarity to King Kong, mainly because of the iconic ape’s emotional resonance.

“From all the creatures that you can remember on screen, King Kong is the only one who is in love, so he has a really emotional dimension that sometimes other monsters lack,” Vigalondo says. “What I love about King Kong is that his motivations are human and raw and wild, so we can identify with him.”
