MMA wrestlers

Dave Beneteau was an awesome wrestler. Elite? I'd say so. If I had his skills I'd rule the southeast in high school and likely college as well!
he is elite

Did you guys follow the Senior Men's US National Championships from this past week/weekend?

Look at this result... I think it shows that Cole will need to lose some of that extra flab and get the cardio up to another level for the national/international freestyle circuit.

"120 kg/264.5 lbs. Freestyle
Tommy Rowlands (Sunkist Kids) dec. Cole Konrad (Minnesota Storm), 3-2, 1-0

First Period
At :29 Rowlands takedown 2pt exposure, 3-0 Rowlands
At 1:42 1pt on stepout, Konrad
At 1:49 Konrad takedown, 3-2 Rowlands

Second Period
At :17 Rowlands takedown, 1-0 Rowlands"

I personally think Konrad has a ways to go before he is very competetive at an international level. Well at least at freestyle. I think he could make big splashes in greco though.

As far as MMA wrestlers go another one that will be showing up soon is Eric Bradley. 2x all american from PSU who also just happens to be an NCAA DI boxing champ. Last i heard he was training at bas and coutures legends and was signed to a 5 fight deal with elite xc. I also heard through the grape vine that he has been training a lot over at 10th planet with eddie bravo and did well at a few grapplers quest tourneys. When he makes his MMA debut i have no idea.

O and you guys who are saying that koscheck isnt all that great of a wrestler need to wake up. I remember watching him wrestle against Lock haven when he was at edinboro. Mother fucker's got skills. Id put him easily above hughes, trigg and a few others when it comes to wrestling.

Koshcheck is easily the best wrestler in mma. I mean randy, hughes, and lindland are good, but Kos is in the next tier of wrestling. He was great when he was at Edinboro.

Konrad just beat the number one US heavyweight Tolly Thompson this past weekend at the Las Vegas open, which is the qualifier for the US trials. Konrad took second place losing to Tommy Rowlands, so I think its safe to say Konrad is capable of competing at a high level internationally.

Im not sure if your being sarcastic or not. I never said he was the best overall. Not by a long shot but that still doesnt mean he isnt a legit wrestler. He is no lindland but id say his freestlye is on par with couture. Greco on the other hand randy owns his ass. Remember couture never won a national title for he was spanked by Kerr. And i do say spanked. If memory serves me correct kerr majored him almost tech falling him. As for hughes vs koscheck ill be everything i own on koscheck in a folkstyle match. And half of everything i own on a freestyle match.

As far as the best overall still active in MMA this disscussion starts and stops with Lindland. I know kenny monday, rulon and others with better credentials fought in MMA but for all intensive purposes they just tried it. Lindland wins this hands down.

Tolly is getting old though. I dont know i personally dont like konrads style. Im willing to admit a have a little bit of a bias against the guy. Being one myself i tend to lean towards more athletic big men. Ala a young tolly, kerry McCoy, tommy rowlands, hell even pat cummins or mocco. Mocco for a "relative" fat guy moves his ass. Konrad seems to use his size and weight too much for my liking. As i said though in greco ill put money on him giving some of the best in the world fits.

Monday got pwnd by Matt Hume. Some kinda ankle lock.
That was in The Contenders, though....it wasn't mma. That was the same event where Frank tapped Hendo in under a minute.

kerr won 12-4 i belive vs couture

Kos and I both went to Edinboro, so he's automatically cool in my book!

Regarding Cole's win over Tolly this past week in Vegas ... It's now being reported that Thompson was injured, and tried to compete anyway. He later conceded a match with Michael Irving because of the injury [and he'd handled Michael in the earlier rounds] so this isn't just some internet rumor..lol

I talked to a wrestler from ASU and he said he thinks the key to handling Cole is to stay very close and keep him off balance .. using superior greco skills... Now, I know this is a tall task, since Konrad's greco is probably his strong point ... However, if you watch Cole's match with Mocco back in ... err I think it was 2005, he was keeping Konrad off balance, and doing a very good job winning the match. Steve wasn't able to maintain his gameplan though ... as he ran into problems late when Cole realized what was going on and started countering it.

I am just happy to get some new faces in the freestyle circuit ... It'll definitely be interesting to see how the young guys do in the big time.

I've been wanting to see him switch over since he finished college

edit- I know it's off topic but the guy who beat Lesnar for the nat'l title is actually the starting guard for the Patriots. Beat Lesnar in wrestling and football and his college didn't even have a team!

I guess that's not quite elite, but I thought I'd throw his name out there since a lot of the other old-timers were getting mentioned.

He was also nat judo champ.

That's true, but Couture took time off between High School and college to fight in the army. Also, Kerr only placed once at nationals (the year he won it all) while Randy was a three time all-american (being the runner-up two years in a row). Also, Randy is much more of a Greco guy and Kerr was a freestyle guy.

Kerr was a U.S. Freestyle Champion once and placed 7th in the wolrd once.

Randy was a U.S. Greco Champion three times and placed 9th in the world once.

They're both elite wrestlers. I would say that Randy has the better overall credentials (although that's debateable). You can't just judge him by one match that happened more that 15 years ago.

I found this on Matyushenko:

http://www.iat.uni-leipzig.de/datenbanken/dbwrest/start.php

I could only find his ju.co. accomplishments before because they spell his name differently. What cracked me up is that in another thread, some guy was arguing that on paper Matyushenko posed no threat to Tito whatsoever. I believe his quote was similar to "What could he possibly have done to Tito?"

Oh id agree with that assessment, im a small guy so i hate the big heavyweights that dont do much. I love watching guys like Mccoy, and Stephen Neal etc. That being said Konrad is a force to be reckon with and he will be right at the top of the heavyweight division for years to come.
