There are some great fighters out there who's out of the cage antics or actions have sidelined their successful MMA careers. Some are even champions.

Jon Jones:

Where to start, between his odd hit-and-run where he broke a woman's arm to his testing positive for cocaine and PEDs, Jones is a walking billboard for what not to do.

Nick and Nate Diaz:

I was not a fan of either of these fighters initially but after time did appreciate their flair for the dramatic and out of cage antics. However, these two would rather smoke weed than fight as marijuana is a banned substance they cannot fight when they are smoking it.

Sad, because both are talented and exciting to watch.

Cain Velasquez:

As everyone knows, I'm not a fan of Cain. But Cain could have been one of the best fighters of all time. He had a decent chin with great recovery, great wrestling, solid striking, and cardio for days which is rare for a HW. He was basically a HW Forrest Griffin. Not a lethal ground practitioner or a 1 punch KO machine like Hunt, but he would wear his opponents down and eventually get the TKO whether standing or from GnP. If Cain hadn't caused his own idiotic injuries he would most likely still be champ and could have gone down as the GOAT.

However, Cain is injury prone. And he was not injury prone from fighting or MMA fighting. He was injury prone for the most idiotic of reasons, he was injury prone because of doing very basic weight lifting completely wrong. It's 2018. People have known how to safely lifts weights for decades now so there is no excuse for his improper weight lifting techniques. High School students all over the world know how to safely lift weights, Cain apparently doesn't.

Everyone knows that some weight lifting movements are supposed to be fast and explosive and they know this isn't one of them. It makes me cringe just watching this.

Who are other MMA fighters who derailed their own careers with their out of cage antics or behavior?

Cris Cyborg

She beefed up from 160 to 175 and now is queen of the weakest division in the history of MMA, instead of ruling the flagship division of WMMA.

War Machine of course.
Jesse Taylor (kicked off tuf finale for a drunken Las Vegas tirade)
Vera held out for higher pay for 18 months or so and was never the same upon return.
Daley.

it's arguable that the Diaz bro's have played it just fine. by making a production of everything they fight less and get paid more. similarly, Conor.

Justin Gaethje.

He's got all the skills in the world, except for the one skill to use them.

Too damn dumb, and too tough for his own good.

Diego Sanchez

He started out as a wrestler with excellent GNP, changed up his striking and would throw flying knees and high kicks, then I think he lost to BJ and then just went into his fights throwing wild hooks. Now his chin is cracked and I'm afraid the guy won't be able to talk if he takes anymore beatings.

Cowboy & Frankie for fighting every six days, and losing title shots as a result.

Ben Askren for never having tested himself against the very best guys on earth.

Well, Cyborg is still a champ and hasn’t gotten into any trouble while in the UFC. So I’d say she doesn’t belong on this list.

Oh, well if you say so.

Me? I say anyone who has hired Tito Ortiz to be their manager at any point in their careers belongs on the damn list.

This one is to be determined.

If he gets probation for his assault and then fights in the UFC but makes more money for his notoriety, it could have been a wise move in the long run.

What’s the old saying, there’s no such thing as bad press?

Gaethje is looking like he is going to end up in a similar spot.

Good list so far. I'll add in fighters that insist on competing outside of their prime (whether physical or motivational) and as a result were "never any good". I.e. Penn, Silva, Fedor, etc.

Created, written and produced for the big screen by Jon Jones..

War Machine of course.

What did Daley do?

He'll always be able to say 'YES!'
