Interested in pictures of MMA fighters wearing/training in a gi. More interested in those who don't originally come from a BJJ background. Here are a few from me:

absolutely no reason to wear the gi if you train for mma

the only problem is all the best people train in the gi so they are forced to put it on to train with the best

It stops you being a spaz and trying to explode and slip out of everything - basically you can't rely on your athleticism over technique in the gi.

"Oh noez not t3h gi!!!!1 I actually haff to use reel techneek when I put dat on!" ~ Every nogi/MMA guy ever

Didn't take long. I have to say I agree with Einarr from my experience at MMA gyms though.

I will never understand how its even a debate purely because of the principal of specificity...I've listened to all justification and I don't agree with the common reasons given

Have you ever trained in the gi for an extended period of time?

Standing up and shaking your opponent off when he has you in an omaplata is a legit escape in no gi. In the gi, no so much.

Little things like that makes the technique much different.

thats like saying judo guys need to train there takedowns in the gi for mma fights and wrestlers use shoes and work ankle picks

Agreed. Gi has the better/bigger talent pool.

That's actually backwards logic:

People train in the gi because it makes it difficult to escape certain positions / submissions.

A judo gi and wrestling shoes make both of those aforementioned techniques easier to establish.

But, let me be the first person to say this:

Train for an MMA fight however you want to!

If you like the gi, great. The qualities that are offered from training in the gi will help you.

If you prefer no-gi, so be it! There's nothing wrong with no-gi and it makes locking in most submissions more difficult.

Train both.

Lol. Okay. Let's NOT doing what the best people are doing. If gi training didn't make better grapplers than people who don't like wearing the gi wouldn't have to subvert their principles to "train with the best."

If you could answer this, that would be great.

Trained for about 2 years both gi and no gi, mostly no gi

doesn't make a difference I still feel I am qualified to have a valid opinion on the subject... I've spent 10 + years studying sport science, coaching and skill development and can tell you one of the first things you learn is the importance of specificity...you don't play 11 a side football if you're a 5 a side player

anyway I'm not anti gi, my reasons for training in the gi are

1. It's fun

2. It means I can train more often

3. It means I can train with more high level people

4. It means I can train with a variety of different people

5. I personally think it is more street applicable, grabbing hoodies and t-shirts is a viable option in street self defence which is an interest of mine

of course it helps my no gi...but what helps my no gi more...2 hours of gi training or 2 hours of no gi training...I will flip a question back to you...

you are an MMA fighter, and the hypothetical situation is you can train with the best in the world in both gi and no gi (so lets imagine you are not restricted by the level of instruction)...and you have 2 hours available to train, what would you do?

Cool explanation, thanks for taking the time to write that up.

I understand what you mean, but I still think the gi will make you better defensively and no-gi will make you better offensively.

I will meet you half way though, I definitely think it can be argued some aspects of the gi are invaluable to grappling in general, just to give an example...

the idea that you can't violently spin out of a back mount because of friction, so therefore you have to technically escape...so in that regard it does teach some good prinicples that can be applied to no gi

on the other hand if your in the 3rd round sweating profusely and you have ended up in some guys back mount...the fact is you CAN violently spin out of the mount instead of trying a time eating technical escape that the judges won't even acknowledge (even though they should) instead you can BOOM explode spin out into his guard, tee off some Ground and pound and earn some points off the judges

Yes, but the energy and sweat are not always going to be there. It's a gamble.

Your technique will always be there.

How come wrestlers are grappling almost naked? Why do Turkish wrestlers put oil over their bodies?

The gi did not necessarily make them better grapplers, there's a correlation for sure but this doesn't mean cause and effect. You could say the best sumo wrestlers have dark hair, but it doesn't mean dark hair improves sumo performance. It just means sumo is popular in Japan, and Japanese people tend to have dark hair. I think the fact that the best grapplers tend to train in the gi is a cultural thing. BTW I mostly train in the gi, but I am not preparing for mma fights.

No one puts as much effort into an activity as martial artists do, without thinking that the way they are doing it is best.
