Hey guys,

Im currently a boxer and did judo Till i was 13. Since there arent bjj schools in my area i was thinking of combining boxing and judo. My boxing gym gives one class a week of MMA, so my thoughts behind this was going boxing for standup fighting, judo for clinching and takedowns and working on my submission offense and defence during this MMA class. What are your thoughts on this ?

well boxing will flow well with judo using punches to get close to get your underhook control like all styles you have to be able to mod it for mma and realize that in judo guys stand very tall and in mma alot of guys are squatted when they get to clinch usually compared to judo guys if iw ere you i would try to grapple with as manyw restlers as you can to work getting your takedowns on them

alot of guys i know who fought had issues with guys who would drop there base low and judo guy couldnt get off alot of there throws and when they did the guys scrambled up to there feet before he could gain position alot of the takedowns you have to follow them down fast guys will do anything now to get back up like with uchi matas i think only 40% of guys or less actually end up in good position after it alot of guys scramble up to there feat due to lack of control after the throw

Who teaches the MMA class? Perhaps they have BJJ experience. But for MMA you should just train MMA, and not separate arts that have a narrow focus.

Yeah i know, but training once a week wont make me any better. Hence the other styles to give me some kind of base.

if u really wana make judo work for mma watch karos judo for mma and rick hawns judo for grappling goes over ways to hit throws without gi and for mma

If you want to do MMA you really should go to an MMA specific school. I’m not saying don’t study any specific art but schools like ATT produce pretty good MMAcentric fighters. Jiu jitsu of course is important but those MMA specific schools know what it takes to put it all together.

also depend

s how long he has realistically its bets tot rain everything by itself for years then learn to blend them but not everyone has years or the money/time for it so there for yeah go to a mma gym and just bust your ass

Are there no wrestling classes? It is a nice idea, but if you were to pursue a career of sorts, move to a bigger city.

In my area in the Netherlands its just Judo and kickboxing, and im lucky with the 1 time weekly MMA. We dont have wrestling and alot of dedicated MMa schools over here so its kind of a puzzle.

If judo and kickboxing is what’s around train that. You’ll be a better martial artist than if you wait 10years for more MMA schools to open up in Holland and then start doing MMA. Judo and kickboxing are both great.

Well if that's all you have then yes I'd be doing both. I'd focus on what I can. You also need wrestling and a kicking aspect so maybe you can bring some people in that knows those areas.

Dude, train hard at what ever is available to you. Get in great shape. Watch a ton of YouTube videos all of the martial arts and MMA. If you are someone who has even a decent natural affinity for fighting then you will be fine. If competing is your goal and you get good enough to take some fights, that may open up new opportunities and take you in different directions.

Boxing and judo with an MMA class a week is a great base for an aspiring MMAer. You will have good hands, good grappling, great balance, etc. Its not like there are many good freestyle wrestlers in your part of the world anyway so you wont really have to worry about running into some monster who will shoot your legs and dump you on your head. Good luck bro.
