I am pretty sure the plot of sentient AI controlled by a shadow organization is really a plot for the next Hitman (a different video game franchise) because it felt like it. Seems like that wasn't the only franchise this movie rips off from "allegedly".

I haven't played Uncharted but it seems like that would be basic framing to go with that scenario. Maybe some of the action scenes prior to that were also similar to Uncharted 2 for the director to call them out?

From what I heard Cruise wants to do more after dead reckoning part 2. My guess is that they wont recast Ethan Hunt, instead he will probably take a different kind of role, like a mentor or recruiter. They sort of teased it a bit in this film. And that whole thing with him training Keri Russell in 3. Also apparently they were setting up Renner to take over as the main character after Ghost Protocol, but Cruise delivered so well that they changed their mind, or something like that.

Eventually you would think Tom wouldnt be able to do the kind of stunts he is doing, but who knows how long might he able to keep this up. It would be cool if they came back around and made a more pure spy thriller like the original (minus the train scene) but I don't know if Cruise would want to do something like that since he seems to enjoy the adrenaline of the stunts.

Aside from his deal with the devil eventually running out at some point and age becoming a factor...we've gotten to the point where the script is being written around the stunts it seems to some degree. Ethan Hunt has never been a terribly interesting character to me and I'd be kind of surprised if he is that interesting to Tom Cruise. But Tom has found a way to basically make a hundred million dollars to do crazy ass adrenaline junkie shit and has more or less become a Hollywood legend for an entirely new reason after age 50 when he should have been slowing down. I think these movies are mostly a waste of his abilities as an actor though. They're fun but who knows if he could have made more Valkyrie type projects. Oh well, it's his life and his body and he's having a good time.

Little known fact: Interview With the Vampire was actually a documentary. Ever since it's release, Cruise and Pitt have had to wear make up to look as though they are slowly growing older, like actual Humans

I don't think Ethan Hunt really is that much of a character other than being Tom Cruise doing stunts. The TV show was so long ago now that it's basically been erased from the public consciousness so I guess everyone identifies M:I with Cruise and Hunt rather than how this all started. So he'll probably get recast is my guess. But at that point it will just be a younger actor who isn't willing to skydive with no parachute into broken glass and sulfuric acid to make sure 30 seconds of action looks as real as possible.

M:I was originally Peter Graves and some guys like the A-Team. Tom Cruise basically co-opted the whole thing and made it the Tom Cruise stunts show, which is fine, but I think if the franchise tries to survive him you'll be looking at The Bourne Legacy best case.

But who knows...just my guess.

Renner getting set up for major franchise roles and kinda failing is his thing. Bourne, MI, MCU.

And I like him as an actor! I think that he was pretty good in all of the above roles.

Yeah he's definitely better than when they tried to do the same things with Jai Courtney and Shia LaBeouf. But honestly I prefer to see him spending his time on stuff like Wind River and North Country and Arrival and The Town etc. So if those big franchises don't pan out it's kind of for the better...at least for me as a moviegoer.

I think Tom Hardy and Chris Hemsworth are getting wasted a bit on this stuff as well but hey...I can't really tell them to turn down extra millions of dollars. Robert Downey made enough money as Iron Man to be the GDP of some small countries...but we may have lost more movies like Zodiac. Oh well...worst case for RDJ some years back was far worse than being an extremely wealthy Iron Man.

Agreed. I never begrudge actors taking on superhero or action franchises because the money and the fame is substantial. But, for example, the thought of Oscar Isaac doing another season of Moon Knight rather than real film roles makes me sad (selfishly).

Yeah never mind the years wasted on the Star Wars sequels. But no doubt he made way more for that than the one about the 60s folk singer.

Sort of....but not exactly. They are both big time action franchises, but where Bond continues on and on and on with new actors, I don't see that happening with M:I. This is Tom Cruise's franchise. Sure, they could reboot when Tom is 90 and finally too old to save the world, and they may, but I'm not convinced it'll follow the James Bond model. When the rebooted one comes along it'll probably tank like Ocean's 8 did and that will be the end of that. Also because it's specifically Tom Cruise making these movies so damn good. The time he puts in behind the scenes, and the people he gathers to make it so. When he goes, it's just gonna be another boring studio movie with no heart, like The Bourne Legacy. The studio will try to cash in and it will fizzle.

I really liked it. I was a bit sad at a certain part of the movie, but I thought it was one of the strongest entries. Top 3, imo, with Ghost Protocol and 3 (though I enjoyed Fallout more, 3 is the better movie).

Saw it in IMAX.

Ludicrous plot. I did not always know what was supposed to be going on (and have watched the previous movies over the years but they are all a blur to me) but I don't think it matters.

The dialogue was incredibly bad at times. At one point Rebecca Ferguson is channelling Shakespeare while saying the most ridiculous lines and I laughed out loud. I appreciate Ferguson trying to make the lines work but her obvious talent juxtaposed with dialogue a college student would be embarrassed to write = unintentional comedy. Meanwhile Ving Rhames looked as if he had just drank copious amounts of cough syrup before reading his lines off of a cue card (seriously - if it turns out that Rhames has a medical condition that I don't know about I apologize in advance).

The various action scenes were very well executed technically but mostly dragged on and on and on. No way that this movie should have been 3 hours long.

Like the Fast & the Furious franchise, for me the stupidity now exceeds the spectacle.

It is not offensively bad. Tom Cruise tries hard. He runs a lot. Does some stunts.

5/10.

I'll probably watch the next one but wait until it streams.

I figured this movie was overhyped I want impressed with m:i 5 or 6.
