I thought Pegg was great especially in the airport scene. He knows his strengths and limitations and plays them well

Yeah Ving was sitting down the entire movie. I just realized that LOL Maybe it is for health reasons.

“I’m pretty fucking far from okay.” *Marcellus Wallace voice*

Yea I realize he is popular idk. I just don't really like him in too much. Except for Shaun of the Dead.

haha one of his best quotes! and might be true now!

Mantis from GOTG was good as the villain

Oh shit I did not know that was her!

Wasn't the worst, wasn't the best. Clearly they were trying to drag this out into 2 parts and I found the whole shit with those magic keys just laughable. 6/10 for shitty story but great action and plenty of Tom Cruise running shots.

Saw it in IMAX.

Ludicrous plot. I did not always know what was supposed to be going on (and have watched the previous movies over the years but they are all a blur to me) but I don't think it matters.

The dialogue was incredibly bad at times. At one point Rebecca Ferguson is channelling Shakespeare while saying the most ridiculous lines and I laughed out loud. I appreciate Ferguson trying to make the lines work but her obvious talent juxtaposed with dialogue a college student would be embarrassed to write = unintentional comedy. Meanwhile Ving Rhames looked as if he had just drank copious amounts of cough syrup before reading his lines off of a cue card (seriously - if it turns out that Rhames has a medical condition that I don't know about I apologize in advance).

The various action scenes were very well executed technically but mostly dragged on and on and on. No way that this movie should have been 3 hours long.

Like the Fast & the Furious franchise, for me the stupidity now exceeds the spectacle.

It is not offensively bad. Tom Cruise tries hard. He runs a lot. Does some stunts.

5/10.

I'll probably watch the next one but wait until it streams.

Watching this right now. They should've named it Mission: Impossible To Make Any Damn Sense Of.

Halfway into the movie and I don't know who the "bad guy" is despite gratuitous exposition.

I don't care about Tom Cruise jumping off a cliff, I just want to nosedive on Pom Klementieff's vagina. She's about the only thing good about this movie.

But what about Hayley Atwell and those magnificent tits, and glorious ass shots at the beginning?

Just got out of this, I would agree that's it about a 6.5-7, i enjoyed Fallout much more but i also liked the addition of Hayley Atwell in this. There were some scenes that delivered but quickly followed with slow scenes trying to over explain.

For anyone that were to stream or watch this later at home, take a shot anytime someone says "The Entity"

While the early global box office numbers have helped boost 'Dead Reckoning' to a total projected opening of about $122 mil thus far ... the movie is still well below its reported budget of $290 million (for just Part 1, mind you). At this rate, it needs to have the kind of legs "Top Gun: Maverick" had to make its money back ... let alone turn a profit.

On a 290M budget, I'm pretty sure this movie needs to hit 1B domestically just to break even, and TMZ suggests Barbie will railroad (pun intended) that idea. Ouch.

I think this movie won’t have the legs that Fallout and Top Gun 2 had. Crazy how a crapload of movies are bombing hard this summer. This won’t bomb as bad as Flash and Indiana Jones but I’m surprised on the budget.

Thankfully Part 2 has already been shot, so regardless of how much Part 1 makes it shouldn't hurt Part 2. And if Part 1 ends up underperforming, maybe Part 2 will make up for it, especially if it has a smaller budget.

On the upside, I believe COVID is the reason the budget exploded on Part 1, so hopefully down the road for Part 9 and 10, the studio won't be too afraid to fund it.

how does a 290M budget movie need 1B to break even? even if marketing is doubling the budget, the math doesnt work out?

Not an expert on it but a 3x gross compared to the budget is the widely reported standard of the breakeven-ness of a movie. Theatres get a piece of the movie ticket gross even if they rely on concessions stands for most of the profit.

Edit- my math was off, this movie will be profitable at 1B USD, but not by a large margin.

Most of Part 2 has been shot, but there is still one major set piece to be filmed, and that's been shut down because of the strike.

Completely unrelated to MI but I was reading a story how Elemental started off as a bomb and ended up having some crazy up hill legs and ended up being another movie to pass The Flash. It's been a wild box office this summer.

As for this movie while a nice 3 hour action movie is fun, I feel like most movies are pushing 2-2.5 hours plus anymore. I liked Dead Reckoning but I eventually started to check my watch. John Wick 4 was excellent but even that movie felt overly long.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING, PART ONE Opens to $80 Million in Its First Five Days for a $235 Million Global Bow

wsdyzaN.jpg

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One boasted a five-day debut of $80 million in North America, including $56.2 million for the weekend proper.

The Paramount and Skydance pic is the latest summer tentpole to come in behind expectations. Heading into the weekend, Dead Reckoning — starring Tom Cruise — had had been tracking to open to $90 million or more domestically. The movie cost nearly $300 million to produce before marketing.

If current projections are right, Dead Reckoning scored the best domestic opening of the franchise behind Mission: Impossible II, which posted a five-day debut of $78.5 million, not adjusted for inflation. Dead Reckoning opened Wednesday in order to give the film more runway before Barbie and Oppenheimer open on July 21.

So far, older adults are fueling Dead Reckoning, with 22 percent of all ticket buyers in the 55 or older bracket. The well-reviewed movie earned an A CinemaScore from audiences.

Overseas, Dead Reckoning opened to $155 million for a global bow of $235 million.

Cruise is a favorite of theater owners. He resisted putting 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick on streaming, and it ended up being the top-grossing domestic feature released in 2022 with $774.7 million domestic, for a total of $1.49 billion globally.

Overall looks like MI Dead Reckoning will be "another MI movie" vs a Tom Cruise post-Maverick break out film. Which, is still pretty good although I the domestic numbers are concerning.

Interesting to see how Barbie and Oppenheimer opening next week will impact MI's legs.

Perhaps off topic, but I can't get a decent seat to see Oppenheimer in IMAX through the end of July. That includes Thursday at 10:40 AM type showings. Every single showing is packed. I mention it in this thread due to Paramount's concerns about losing the IMAX and big premium screens to Oppenheimer so quickly.

I thought this one was a step down from Fallout, that film was great but this one tried to hard to be an epic piece. It was too long aswell and often times tripped up on itself, with so much happening but no real purpose.

Also, why did they remove the M5 badges from the BMW M5? Thought that was odd.

On the subject of ratings system I have always had my own.
10 - Masterpiece, really can't be made better and invokes an emotional response. Matrix, Gladiator, LotR etc. I have to watch them yearly.
9 - All-time great movie, i'd happily watch it any time and never get bored.
8 - Awesome film, something i'd watch again from time to time and still love it.
7 - Very good film, thoroughly enjoyed it but probably won't watch it again for some time.
6 - Enjoyable film I will unlikely watch again.
5 - A bad film that had good elements, will not watch again.
4 - a really bad film with maybe a good production value, will never watch again.
3 - Now you're starting to take the piss. I managed to watch it to the end but it wasn't worth it.
2 - Are they trying to make a shit movie? Trash, will never watch again.
1 - I can't even finish this piece of shit film.

I gave Mi a 6 for what it's worth.

I think 2.5x is like a low estimate and 3x a high estimate in part because foreign revenue gives less than 50%.

290 budget + 100 marketing = 390-400.
400 x 2.5 = 1 billion

I saw it and had a very good time. I have few nitpicky things though.

The car chase scene (Venice?) was a tad too long.

The train scene felt drawn out in some places.

But the derailment scene was better than Titanic, IMHO. Fast paced and edge of your seat action

The Entity had the wrong name. They should've just gotten permission and called it "Project 2501"

I enjoyed it quite a bit. Work kicked my butt the past 6 days, so when I cranked back into that movie recliner, I felt myself fall asleep about 3 times. It wasn't that the movie was bad, I was just that tired.

I caught most of it, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'll have to go back and watch it again, but I don't think I really missed important parts.
