I’ll be 100% my first CIB was after multiple engagements determined not to be worthy enough for the badge. Those same engagements later would have certainly been CIBs, for everyone in the formation. I won’t say any details but I saw a unit have one vehicle engaged in a very long convoy, every pax in the convoy was awarded a CIB… this was during Syria ISIS ect so much later in GWOT.

I’m not a badge protector, I don’t care honestly, the military under awards its enlisted people left and right so any props is good with me. That being said, IF I was a rear passenger in a MRAP and got a CIB because 3 vehicles ahead of me there was an engagement and I did nothing.. I would be bullshittibg that story for the rest of life.

I was in 3 convoys that got IEDed, shot at multiple times(rounds hitting the truck)) as a driver, no CAR. Sit in the galley making food while a plane drops a bomb, CAR, get fucked Navy. Lol

That happened like 20 years ago when a MEU was floating off the coast of Jordan for a training exercise. A single RPG was shot at the USS Kearsarge (no damage, no one hurt) and every sailor aboard got a CAR. The marines on board didn't.

They were inside of builds and we couldn't see the muzzle flashes so no one knew where to lay down fire.

They relaxed it later on where you didn't have to take and return direct fire if you hit an IED. "You" being the vehicle or everyone on the convoy depending your leadership.

It's an individual award that has to be documented, submitted, reviewed, and approved.

Senior officers are on ships, no so much in convoys though right?

It's not always about what happens, it's who puts the award in....

But yes Navy can get fucked for multiple reasons...armature boat drivers..

We had O-6s with us because we were a security detail on the first deployment.

Basing it off my experience with large CG cutters (O4/5 COs) where if you do anything, it's awards aplenty for all, whereas if you as an enlisted officer in charge of a shore station try to put your boat crew in for an award for saving the lives of 4 people it's "that's their job, put it in their end of tour award"

They ended up securing the area, saving the lives of several US Army personnel and Iraqi Police officers. The Sgt that took command of the situation was put in for a Bronze Star by the army unit for all of the lives they saved. Our LT HQ for the detachment shot it down because Sgts don't get Bronze Stars for that. The team's Gunny lit her up and almost got NJPed for it. That Navy Commendation Medal was the most metal shit I have heard in person.

They got a few "but Sirs" as a courtesy and opportunity to correct their error in judgement...the stubborn ones got to explain themselves to the Senior Os. Didn't always get me what I wanted but they learned it was easier to take my advice.

Hence why you take care of the baby Os as a junior petty officer, it's a small coast guard, and you might not work for them as a Chief if they make commander, but it's good when they have nice things to say about you to their fellow Commander classmates that you do work for.

Sadly some try to go too far on SNCO power trip alone with no tact amd now fail doubly because now this O will have a bad experience with SNCOs and remember that shit when they are senior O.

Or they kiss O ass and lose all respect of their peers and juniors...ruining the junior Es trust in the NCOs..

It sucks when it happens.

You have to build trusting relationships. Don't sell out, but don't burn the brass unless you're absolutely in the right and people's life's will be fucked if you don't...and helps when you know the damn regs to back you up.
