Mike Tyson figuring out that he's Balrog/ M Bison

Mike.jpg

Balrog, a clone of Mike Tyson, was called M. Bison (sounds like Mike Tyson, right?) in Japan's Street Fighter II. When it was moved to America, they changed his name to Balrog. And they changed the boss' name to M. Bison.

Here's a video of Mike Tyson finding that out 20 years later:

And here's an article:

The former boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is pretty well aware of his video game presence in the classic boxing video game Punch-Out!!, since it remains a classic staple from the NES era. But imagine our surprise – and his – when he had no idea that he was the basis for a legendary boss character from the 1991 fighting game Street Fighter II.

I'll have to watch his reaction later, cool. Thanks for posting this

Dan is not Fedor lol. Dan first appeared in SF:Alpha in 1995.

edit: also pretty cray that so many people (on a fighting forum) did not know Tyson is Balrog/M.Bison. So obvious lol
really? dang i seen an old video saying he represented fedor. they showed some of his throws in game and the sambo was real. thank you for the post!

“ I see a lawsuit coming “. Ha ha . Fo realz . You can’t just steal a man’s likeness.

I can imagine mike looking at the mirror and then a photo of balrog/bison

"Tython.....Bython"

You guys didnt realise that he was based on Tyson....hes basically a cartoon version of him..and wears boxing gloves ffs
LOL I'm shocked. I'm kind of surprised that Mike didn't know as I'd put him down as a game player and everyone I knew at that time was playing Street Fighter II.

Lawrence kenshin put a good YT clip up on the real sagat couple of weeks ago.

I think tyson would be barred from entry into japan because of his record. He should sue them just for that. They shouldn't use him if they think he's such a pariah.

I can only imagine that the people who are saying they didnt know it was him, are either blind or fucking stupid.

I was going to put it down to age, but nah, that is not a pass on this one...not when you are posting in a boxing forum and know the game in question

Another famous video game character that bears resemblance to Tyson is 'Combo' (TJ Combo) from the Killer Instinct series including the original from '94. I've played 'em all at the arcade and when they were ported to the home consoles.

Abel from Street Fighter 4 is the one inspired from Fedor(I think). He got the Sambo moves and the top gi/wrestling singlet getup they wear in competitions.

Edit: Couldn't find anything confirming that so dunno for sure.

So you kind of just made it up then?

To clear that Dan ispiration up: Capcom wanted to mock SNK's "Art of Fighting" games, so they made an intentionally weak as fuck character who looks like a mix of the 2 main characters from the Art of Fighting franchise: Robert Garcia and Ryo Sakazaki (Dan has basically Robert Garcia's head and Ryo Sakazaki's gi).

Robert Garcia in the Art of Fighting games was based on Steven Seagal, which is why Dan also kinda resembles him. Ryo Sakazaki was actually inspired by Ryu and Ken from the first Street Fighter, which the creators of Art of Fighting worked on previously. SNK also has a similar "mock" character towards Capcom in Yuri Sakazaki, who uses most of Ryu and Ken's move while canonically only knowing the "most basic" form of Ryo Sakazaki's style.
