I think it's nothing short of incredible that the spin/rationalizing appears to be along the lines of "I don't believe him" with regard to a guy that just pled guilty to a crime.

If he thought he was gonna be found guilty anyways doesnt it make sense that he would plead and cooperate to lessen his punishment?

Wrong. The judge has the power to reject a deal. Also he plead guilty to 5 counts of tax evasion something you said he was afraid of spending his life in prison for.
