Michelle "Karate Hottie" Waterson vs Tecia Torres Added to UFC 194

Go back to the Joanna J "superstar" thread with that nonsense. Stay on topic.

I hope this doesn't end up on the main card...

Waterson is one of the few females I don't mind on the main card. But with Torres' "fighting" style it would suck the life out of the audience.

Really hope Waterson pulls this off. Tecia is a hard fighter to beat, especially if you are really exciting.

Mods need to make a sticky rule mandating that all Waterson threads contain at least one pic in the op

Agreed. Will be interesting to see if Tecia can be finished.

Lol i misstyped that (its really hard to speak and type a message at the same time hahaha). I meant to say taht I hope this doesn't end up on the main card. Just seems totally out of place when compared to Aldo vs McGregor, Weidman vs Rockhold and Souza vs Romero.

No problem :)

It's probably going to be half way through the prelims or something.

Not a great fight from Torres' perspective in her climb to a title fight but its a perfect matchup for the fans.

I enjoyed that Mark, thanks. :)

She didn't answer my question, though.

Or, on second thought, maybe she did, indirectly. I asked her, if she were to get a title shot against Jedrzejczyk, what does she think her edge would be? And she spoke, in this video, about not being in a rush for a title shot, that she is still young, and that she would be happy fighting multiple other non-championship fights, including a re-match with Paige. So maybe that was an answer to my (unvoiced by her) question. Maybe she doesn't see herself having any edge whatsoever at this time, when it comes to Joanna. Honestly, I don't either... as much as I enjoy Tecia's fights (with the exception of her high elevation fight with Angela Hill).

What comments did she make?

I think it was during the Hill post-fight interview, she said she likes to point fight and win decisions or something along those lines. There was a bit of outrage on Sherdog about those comments. I'm trying to find a quote or clip.

i really hope Torres doesn't win this by another boring decision

Good fight, step up for Waterson. Big fight in the div.

Not really a step up at all for Michelle. While Tecia is technically ranked higher, Michelle has way more experience and the more well rounded skill set, and is a former Champion. That said, this fight does pose some challenges for Michelle, namely Tecia's pace.

Tecia throws more volume than Michelle, way more actually, but Michelle has heavier hands than Tecia. I also think we will see more offensive wrestling from Michelle, which Tecia has recently tried to implement also, but Michelle is stronger in this area.

Waterson by 2/3rd rd submission.

If Torres wins, it will almost certainly be by decision, but probably not a boring one.

Waterson says that she'll submit Torres if the fight goes to the ground, and I think that Tecia knows she's at a big disadvantage on the ground, so she won't use a lay-'n'pray strategy. As she said in the video, she's hoping for a stand-up battle. And she expects that to please the fans. If she wins a stand-up battle, it'll likely be by decision because she doesn't really have KO power in her punches or kicks, but it could be enormously entertaining anyways. Both Torres and Waterson have flashy stand-up arsenals, so a stand-up battle between them has the potential to look spectacular. Tecia's Invicta FC fights were very entertaining.

I don't think Torres will be able to 'point fight' like she usually does. These two will bring out the best in each other and it'll be a great fight, IMO.

I'm a huge Waterson fan, but I think Torres has a good chance of winning a decision through volume and octagon control. She has shown that she can keep up an high pace of striking over a three round fight whereas Michelle seems to be more conservative and go for harder shots. We'll have to see how the judges balance number vs power.

Waterson has also seemed vulnerable to pressure at times. It's possible to back her up into the cage. She seems to be getting better at circling out. Hope it works.

Finally, I think Tecia might very well take Michelle down. I think Waterson sometimes leaves her leg out a bit too long on kicks and it gives a free takedown to her opponents.

What I'm hoping for, though, is Michelle turning Tecia into her personal punching bag for 8-10 minutes before getting a TKO.

Yeah Torres is hella boring. Waterson won't allow her thou

severian doesnt know wether to add you to his kill list or not after reading your post:icon_lol:
i agree torres could win on volume alone, but if chick norris gets her on the floor its all over.

I didn't know that, but I guess she's stuck to it. Not a finish in sight.

Booo bad matchup. Torres will be boring and just hold onto Waterson for the decision. More bad match-making by Joe Silva.

I completely forgot about Torres' gameplan against Hill. Im hoping that was just a one off because of Hill being a striking specialist.

There were a few things in this Q&A that stood out to me, the first being the change in Tecia's tune about fighting for a TS. Before JJ fought Penne, Tecia seemed to think that she was ready for a TS, and I think I know what changed her mind, LOL.

She also said that she hates blood .. I can't imagine that watching JJ annihilate Penne's face did anything to increase Tecia's confidence in fighting for the title .. she doesn't really want to fight JJ. :icon_lol:

I also noted her statement that she expected her fight with KH to end in a UD "like all of my fights" :( This is why I've been off the tornado train for a while. I like Tecia as a person, just not so much as a fighter because she is not really a fighter. She is more of a person who likes to compete, hence the dedicated point fighting style.

While I agree with most of what you've said, I believe that Michelle is far more likely to go for the TD, and get it. Michelle really didn't need to take Magana down in their fight because Magana had nothing for her on the feet.

Michelle going for the TD against Magana spoke volumes about her confidence in her wrestling/grappling, because it is actually where Magana had the best chance to win.

I think Michelle is going to mix her striking and grappling in this fight.

I think Tecia's announcement, in this video, that she is applying to graduate school is another clue that Tecia's eyes are no longer focused on the title belt.

Karate babe by whatever she wants Torres is so one dimensional and boring it isn't even funny

This should be a good scrap. Hopefully better than Hill vs Torres. I think that's the worst sw fight I've ever seen in the ufc.

JJ, Waterson is coming for that belt. Be afraid.

How is this fight even possible? Watersons doctor said her hand won't be healed enough to train with until November. She will basically been out of the gym except for cardio for 4 months. No strength training using her right arm, no rolling, no striking. That will give her basically a month long camp if everything goes right.

Here's the rub: The only two fights Michelle has lost in the past 7 years have been short camps. She likes a 8 to 10 week camp.

I'm worried about this fight.

Agreed, and good for her too! I think that MMA is just a way for Tecia to make money while being active and competitive in a martial arts discipline.

As far as the not liking blood thing and MMA fights, I think that Tecia thought she was safe at 115 because for the most part we don't often see a lot of damage in the women's divisions as compared to the men. Tecia prolly watched the JJ/Penne fight like "aww hail no!". :icon_lol:

I'm up for a Celebrity Jeopardy death-match between Tecia Torres, Alex Chambers, Jinh Yu Frey, and Rosi Sexton.

I agree with everything in this post, but with one modification. IF Waterson is losing or it's a close fight on the feet, she will take Torres down.... anytime she wants. People tend to forget Waterson is bigger than Torres and has been really honing her wrestling.

As was mentioned by another poster, as crappy as Magana is, she is MUCH more deadly on the ground than Torres is.... and Michelle took the fight there anyway.

I am predicting Waterson comes out swinging and kicking HARD, with NO respect for Torres power (why should she?) aiming for a TKO.

 I'm liking this matchup....for obvious reasons. I can see this being some sort of title eliminator
