We all know Brock showed up and looked pretty good at 200. Obviously didn't seem to show lingering effects of diverticulitis, but I always wondered how much it really did play a factor for him back in the day, and just wondered what the hell the condition was like - how debilitating, etc.

Met a guy related to my neighbors (a few days back), who I hang out with on a fairly regular basis. Anyway he had diverticulitis and had just been scoped a few weeks prior to meeting him. My curiosity about Brock still lingered so I picked his brain about the whole ordeal.

(when I mentioned Brock he had no clue who I was talking about, but when I told him he was a wrestler/fighter who dealt with it he seemed blown away that he was able to recover and compete again so soon after surgery; this convo took place prior to 200 by a few days, so I was referencing the "old" brock)

The guy said it was one of the most debilitating things he's ever experienced. Said the pain was worse than anything he'd ever dealt with and it was hard just standing up let alone walking. Said he'd flat out never experienced anything as extreme. Also said the recovery was brutal and that he didn't want to go out or do anything for the first week other than lay in bed, it was so bad.

I just thought it was interesting because I was always real curious how devastating it was for Brock. Hate to be a douche, but I wondered if Brock kind of used it as an excuse because it was clear he had some issues absorbing big strikes.

Guess Brock wasn't BSing (again, I didn't know if he was or wasn't, as I had ZERO knowledge of diverticulitis) at all about what it did to him physically and what it did to his fighting career.

I just thought it was interesting to hear first hand from someone who had dealt (and was still dealing) with it. I figured I couldn't be the only one to wonder how debilitating it truly was - thought I'd share the little experience.

whole thing made me feel like an ass monkey for questioning Brock's fortitude.

I think if anything, Lesnar doesn’t get nearly enough credit for fighting through it for a while, and recovering from it. It can be excruciating, and even on good days can suck the life right out of you. of course everyone’s case is different, but they don’t remove part of your colon for the hell of it.

Illness or not I still think Cain and Overeem beat him.

All people need to do is look at the list of fights he's had.

Can't call him anything but a fighter after that. WWE-star or not. Dude is a badass.

Brock truly is the baddest man on the planet. Believe....dat!

Does is probably suck to have diverticulitis? Absolutely. But Brock lost because he didn't and never did have the skills to compete with well rounded fighters (IE: the top guys in the division). It had little, if anything to do with his illness.

Unless you think a side effect of diverticulitis is shitty standup.

My mom had diverticulitis. True story.

Did not cause her to really miss any work or change her routine. She handled it like a boss and not like the pussies you know or Brock!

well, theoretically, a side effect of diverticulitis COULD lead to shitty standup. If the guy is terrified of taking a shot to the bread basket, it's going to affect his performance.

I'm DEFINITELY not saying Cain and Overeem destroyed him BECAUSE of the health issues, and I think both guys have a VERY good chance at beating him again, but it COULD conceivably make a difference in his standup technique.

Your momma is a bad ass. I'd recommend she calls out Cyborg.

Always wonder why some go out of their way to be the turn in the punch bowl. No one’s talking about his skillset.

Your mum sounds like an inspirational lady. With all due respect, I don't think her job involves anything nearly as painful as getting kneed in the stomach by Overeem

Anyone who doesn't think having a couple feet of your colon removed isn't one of the most traumatic and debilitating things a human body can experience is a colossal moron.

Well, no one except the TS.

From my understanding one of the other problems besides pain is that it's hard for your body to absorb food and nutrients properly. So for a 300lb professional athlete who trains hard and probably needs a boatload of calories to sustain his muscles....it's gotta be hard to work out and not feel properly hydrated and fueled.

I agree with those saying it didn't cause him to lose some of his fights. Maybe it played a factor and maybe it didn't. It's hard to say.

Not every case is the same. Sometimes a change in diet is all that is needed, other more serious cases involve surgery.

I've suffered a lot of injuries in my life - obviously I've never had diverticulitis, so I don't know much about that - but I was able to heal quickly from some of my injuries, and was down and out for longer than most with others. People and their body's respond differently to injury and recovery.

Like I said, I had no knowledge of diverticulitis whatsoever, I was curious, I had some questions - so I guess my lack of knowledge in the area makes me a colossal moron.

That condition is the real deal. The fact that Brock came back so soon is pretty impressive but maybe not the smartest. There are many factors that that condition would drastically hinder his training and strength. Number he could not train or work out so he was deteriorating slowly. Then you factor in the surgery where I guess he would have been on bed rest and IV only for at least a week. You cant eat after a GI surgery that serious. During the week or more of bed rest and no food the atrophy on a man of that mass would have been enormous. I'm sure Brock was eating at least 10,000 to 20,000 calories a day and working out. Cut out the calories and lay in bed for an extended amount of time and the atrophy is severe. It is not easy to get back to full strength in a short time. It takes months if not longer. So old Brock lost a lot strength going through that and lost all that time he could been in the gym. He went in less than 100 percent for sure after his surgery. He should be 100% now for sure but father time is knocking as well. It would been nice to see that never happen. I believe he would have had continued to fight and been a top 5 guy. He probably would have retired after loosing a couple to top guys or champions any way.

There's literally nothing about his skills mentioned in your quote.

Are you seriously that bad a reading? he wondered aloud how it affected Brock and if he had used his diverticulitis as an excuse for his losses. I answered that I dont think it had that dramatic of an effect and yes, I believe he had used it as excuse because his losses stemmed from things that had nothing to do with his illness (a lack of skills).

Its called a fucking discussion. Is it really that hard to keep up?
