The Middle East mattered greatly during the Cold War and the two decades immediately after due to OPEC's control of a large proportion of the world's oil supply. US and Canadian fracking and improved techniques for getting oil out of the oil sands has made North America an energy powerhouse.

That negated several of the key dynamics that kept entrapping us in Mideast affairs. Now we just have to break the psychological habit of trying to solve their problems. Not only haven't we been very good at it, we also have no need to try any more.
