Reminds me of the story about the RAF Fighter Ace Douglas Bader. A few years after the War, Adolf Galland, the Luftwaffe's top Ace, held a reunion dinner in West Germany, and invited Bader and other Battle of Britain veterans. Bader walked into the hotel ballroom, which was filled with Luftwaffe pilots and loudly exclaimed,

"Good God - I had no idea we left so many of you bastards alive!"

"You didn't", Galland replied, "Most of these men fought on the Eastern Front".
