"I was never satisfied with the Israeli explanation. Their sustained attack to disable and sink Liberty precluded an assault by accident or some trigger-happy local commander. Through diplomatic channels we refused to accept their explanations. I didn't believe them then, and I don't believe them to this day. The attack was outrageous." -- Dean Rusk, US Secretary of State (1961-1969)
Yeah...because Heydrich did all of that and wasn't even an ideologue, Reinhard did not even have particularly hostile views towards Jews. It was simply a lucrative career with an incredible amount of power and prestige to him. There was no directive, order or plan he wasn't willing to carry out or draw up for its advancement. His IQ was also probably around 135-145 or so, like most of the other state leadership that were still alive and tested at Nuremberg (Hjalmar Schacht, Karl Dönitz, Hermann Göring).
They were heavily influenced by Guido von List and even opted to use his Armanen runes for their insignia. Wotanism is also an alternate, more violent type of Odinism with a distinct racial element that doesn't feature in Ásatrú or the like.
Guido Karl Anton List, better known as Guido von List (5 October 1848 – 17 May 1919), was an Austrian occultist, journalist, playwright, and novelist. He expounded a modern Pagan new religious movement known as Wotanism, which he claimed was the revival of the religion of the ancient German race, and which included an inner set of Ariosophical teachings that he termed Armanism. During his lifetime, List became a well-known figure among the nationalist and völkisch subcultures of Austria and Germany. His work, propagated through the List Society, influenced later völkisch groups such as the Reichshammerbund and Germanenorden, and through those exerted an influence on both the burgeoning NSDAP and especially the Schutzstaffel.
Adolf Hitler nicknamed Heydrich the, Man With the Iron Heart. If Adolf fucking Hitler himself thinks you're a cold-blooded bastard, you must be something pretty, "special".
As you correctly state, Heydrich wasn't particularly anti-Semitic. He viewed the Final Solution as just another job he had been given, to be carried out as efficiently as possible. The Nazis themselves used to joke that, "Himmler's Brain is called Heydrich", because Reinhard was Himmler's go-to man if he needed something important done. Heydrich was heavily involved in the Night of the Long Knives that effectively destroyed the SA and secured the primacy of the SS.
Debate continues among Psychiatrists as to whether or not Heydrich was a Psychopath/Sociopath. Some believe he did not suffer from any form of Personality Disorder, but was in fact an INTJ, a rare personality type so pragmatic that all that matters to them is reaching the goal they are striving for. No matter what the cost to other people.
I highly recommend Conspiracy, directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Heydrich in the film. I'm hard pressed to think of a better, and more chilling, depiction of the banality of evil. The Nazi, "elite" sitting around a table and working out the logistics of genocide, as though they were business men working out how to maximise profit. They even break for lunch while doing so.
