Mel Gibson did armbar and triangle choke in Lethal weapon (1987) way before UFC 1 and Gracies

I'm pretty sure they mention him being a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu in the movie early on.

I’m sure Gracies don’t claim to have invented arm bars

Bobby Bass who was former US Special Forces and a Judo champ did the fight choreography.

* I was wrong. Rorion Gracie coordinated that fight scene*

So there's no YT clip you can show us? To be honest I barely remember the movie.

It's Funny because the clip is pretty legit , Mel must have studied some grappling in his life.

Arm bars and chokes have existed for hunderds and hundreds if not thousands of years. The UFC 1 wasn't some peak of martial arts fighting of the time, it was a low profile tournament that had mediocre hand picked martial artists attend. Jiu jutsu, sambo and judo have all existed for far longer than that. It did show the limits of pure stand up fighting for sure though.

Rorion did fight choreography for that film, he's also in the film.
Bobby Bass, former US Special Forces, Stunt man, and Judo Gene 3rd degree black belt was the fight choreographer. I think Rorion did a different movie.

In an interview in Martial Arts Ilusutrates August 1999, Romero Cavalcanti (black belt under Rolls Gracie) explained how Rolls Gracie introduced the triangle to BJJ. Rolls was clued in by a student named Sucuri, who found it in an old judo book. Apparently unknown to Prof. Cavalcanti, and Rolls, the triangle was already well-known to most judokas in Rio and São Paulo as early as 1955, and in São Paulo at least, much earlier.

Mel did it in Lethal Weapon because of the Gracies training him actually. It was ahead of its time and he thought it would be cool in the movie and it was.

Rorion worked with them in Lethal Weapon 3.

Yeah, BJJ was in fact born before UFC 1 and yes, combat choreographers and stunt doubles actually trained in martial arts.

This makes it even stranger that Dan Severn and Ken Shamrock didn't know for triangle and other basic BJJ stuff? Again, movie is from 1987!!?
You do realise Bruce Lee slapped an armbar on his student at the beginning of enter the Dragon don't you?
"Don fink! Feeeeeew".

But all fighters in first couple of UFCs didn't know shit about it??? You don't find that strange? Hollywood knew, but guys entering no-rule fighting didn't??
